Infinium Headphones

Kind of exploring getting the Infinium. Kelly Co states you have to get an 'optional' headset that is water proof as the unit does not come with headphones that work in the water. I have a couple of headsets with the Ikelite connector that I could use if...the Infinium uses that connector. Any help on that from anyone? Thanks...Jim

Hello Jim. I would ask if they would sell you the unit with the Mark II headphones. It can be done that way, as the stock headphones are useless for water hunting. I asked another dealer and they offered to set it up that way for me. That is the only submersible headphones I'm aware that will fit the unit. Garrett has their own connections. I would also HIGHLY recommend you to see if they would sell you a unit, with the 8" mono and keep the 10X14", as it will be VERY tough to use in fresh water. The separation will be lousy. I used the 10X14" on the Mark II and it was hard to control in the water and could not tell much gain over the 8" on depth. I would expect similar results with the Infinium. Get ready to have your mind stretched, as this unit has probably the most advanced learning curve of any submersible.

Thanks for that info. Something I never would have considered. I suspect if I learned the Explorer, to a certain degree, and run the E-Trac I probably could learn the Infinium. It's difficulty was one of the attractions. Garrett's own connectors? Weird! I have the Sea Hunter and it uses the Ikelite fittings for the headphones. Whou'ld u thunk?? Appreciate your comments about the coils. I might re-think this a bit. I do see a pulse unit somewhere down the road and from what you say about the initial set up, I might have to look at one of the other manufacturers. It's kind of like buying the Excal and then having to get a straight shaft, different headphones, etc. It does increase customer purchases for the industry, but after the already high price for the Excal you'd think it'd be ready to go. Later...Jim

Hello Jim, you are welcome. What you are talking about using the ikelite connectors is the Sea Hunter 500(non-current model), I am talking Sea Hunter Mark II. The connections are entirely different. Don't let me discourage you on one though, as I've heard impressive results using one, and John Edmonton (Garrett forum and sometimes here) uses one in fresh water and does well. If the dealer is cooperative, they would make provision for what YOU want. My local dealer said it was not a problem, to have one built by Garrett, the way I wanted it. I wanted Mark II headphones and the 8" mono and it could be be delivered just that way. Ask your Garret dealer to do it for you. If not, I have another dealer that CAN get it done that way for you. The cost is minimal over what comes factory equipment(land headphones and a 10X14" coil). It you figured out the Explorer, then you would probably be able to get the Infinium down, but I mentioned submersibles. Lets face it, the Infinium will handle better using a straight shaft too. Anything needs a little treaking to get it just right. Anderson makes a killer straight shaft (available from Kellyco) for the Infinium/Mark II. Hip mounting is asking for catastrophy, been there done that!

Hi grumpyolman, when I bought mine I was told that I can go in the water and submerse the unit but not the headphones, it's got that type of whatever it is on the headphone plug. So the plug area itself is waterproof but not the headphones (that come with the unit). I don't know if this is a mod that was done or it's like this with all versions, you might want to check.
