Found this in a old road bed today with a few round balls and wondered if it was a saddle buckle??

My guess, by it's size is that it is a "half" of a bit like we used to use with draft animals, mules and horses. The straight part was linked to another straight section that was attached to an identical ring. The leather headstall was attached to the rings and the straight sections were inserted between the jaws of the animal and the headstall went around the head.

Thanks for the help, I thought it was a part of a saddle. You cant tell from my picture but I knew it was a buckle of some kind.

I don't know what it is, but I found alot of them in a Union camp here in Alabama. BEAR
