I drove Formula Ford 2000s for a few years in Sports Car Club of America races in the Central Florida region in the mid 90s. Not near as fast or powerful as an Indy car, but similar design. I had a little Sports Racer ricochet off the straight at Sebring into a wall on the side of the track. He then come flying back across the track several feet in the air right over the top of me. Missed my roll bar/helmet by inches. Got my attention! Later that year a guy spun in a turn right in front of me and was facing my car dead in the track. I managed to miss his cockpit and shear off all the suspension on one side of both cars. Went from about 75mph to 0 mph in about 10 feet. Just missed smacking my helmet on the steering wheel that time. I felt that one for several days from the seat belt burns on my shoulders.
Hurt my wallet for a lot longer. It cost big bucks to put my race car back together! Definately got to be rich or have a good sponsor. I wasn't rich and was my own sponsor. Retired from car racing not long after that. I was using up my 9 lives and going broke too quickly! By the way, my buddy is on his way to Sebring this weekend for a Formula Ford race. Good luck David!
