What is the VDI reading on the older IH's I know they are different tks
 
early "wheat back" cents from 1909 into the early 1920s will have a Target ID somewhat similar to the modern zinc cent. This is if you are comparing clean and decent coins in a controlled environment.
Older pennies, such as those noted, that are still in the ground can (and will) produce a variety of readings a little down-scale or up-scale from what they will out of the ground due to a deterioriated condition, ground signal challenges, in-ground position, etc. The 1881 Indian Head I popped last Saturday at about 2"-2
