INCONSISTANT DEPTH READING AT PRO

26cent

New member
Hey guys, ever since I got my at pro back for the falsing issue I get inconsistent depth reading on objects. I locate an object and it says it's 4 inches down, pass over it again and it says it's 10 inches down, pass over it again and it's 8 inches down. Worked better before they fixed the falsing issue, said 4 inches I found it at 4 inches. Am I messed up or the AT PRO, about to sell it off.....

There are many reasons why a metal detector can get various depth inconsistencies with regards to the depth reading. This would be typical of all machines.

SIZE OF THE TARGET

The best accuracy of a metal detector is achieved with objects at or about coin size. A target smaller and larger often times will read more shallow then it actually is.

MINERALIZATION OF THE SOIL

If the soil matrix is too high with mineralisation, the coil can actually read the mineralization instead of the target itself, or a combination of both, which again will give inaccuracies

ORIENTATION OF THE TARGET TOWARDS THE COIL

A perfectly horizontal coin will give a better probability of it's depth compared to one laying on an angle. Depending on which side the coin will be read by the coil, will give again, different readings.

MASKING FROM OTHER TARGETS

The detector may not even be showing another target which is under the coil because of discrimination or too close proximity of of other junk targets, resulting in different depth reading.

You can have any one of these scenarios or a combination of these happening under the coil, which will affect the depth readings. This is typical with ALL metal detectors. If you trade in your AT Pro because of this, you will find similar results with whatever you get. On the plus side, using the AT Pro in Pro mode gives you a modulated (deeper targets sound quieter) audio and with the DD Standard coil, you get excellent target separation. Learn your machine well. Put in the time. You have one of if not the best metal detectors available at the moment, so learn it well and you will get great results. Perhaps you might want to consider trying different hunting sights, or set up a test garden with various targets to help you.

Here is a link to Garrett's Videos which might also help you. And you are asking some very good questions too. :) http://www.garrett.com/hobbysite/hbby_at_pro_videos.aspx

thanks for the the explanation John-Edmonton, I'll be setting up a test garden to try your different scenario's, maybe that will help me learn the subtle differences in tones and sounds in Pro mode. Will check out the Garrett video as well
