INCOMING!

It's been over 30 years since I have taken these slides out and thought I need to get them scanned. I was shocked on how bad some had faded, others had taken on a blue cast and others a red cast. A lot of them had gotten wet and there's nothing there any more, gone forever.

My first meal in country, I noticed black specks in the bread. Looking closer and it turned out the black specks were weevils! Since I was a FNG (fairly new guy, except it's not fairly) at the time, I tried picking out the weevils. You could tell the new guys from the seasoned guys as the new guys could be seen picking out the weevils. You got use to them and it wasn't a problem anymore. The only problem with this once you get back to the real world (back home) you know how hard it is to try and find weevil bread at a bakery?

When the rainy season started, all of a sudden when it started raining, everyone started stripping off and and I ask what was going on and they replied "Going to take a shower", except it was out in the rain. Quite a sight, seeing a bunch of men, young and old alike, butt naked out in the rain taking a shower. I also had a problem doing this after I returned home. People seem to get upset over this. Habits sometimes are hard to break.

The bottom photo was a direct hit on the Latrine (out house) and boy was everyone upset.

To view, from "in country" Soldiers, such as yourself, and are much appreciated. I hope they bring back some of your better memories. Ready for more, whenever you are ready!
Thank You,
Ron J

It seemed when I was in and out of there in 65 thru 68 they wanted to hit the Ammo dumps and the LST's coming into the mouth of the rivers more than the outhouses . I saw them hit a few tanks that looked like your jeeps did they don't look very safe after you see one of those morters hit them they look just like the jeeps in your pictures just a shell left and nothing else . Once in awhile they gave you a little time to think about it and wonder what you got your self into at 17 years of age . This is me back then .

im sure you already know this but you can give them new life with software......i use Element 10....worked miracles for me.......and easy to use..but you have to scan the slides first and your scanner may even have come with software to improve colors etc

Detector Man, I also use Elements 10 and CS4, but mostly Elements 10. I have been putting this off for years, getting these slides scanned. and have waited too late, as they had faded so bad in some cases. In a few cases, there isn't anything there, just clear film now. The strange thing is, we could only get color slides, not negative film.

at first i took film pictures over there ...later on (dont know why anymore) i stuck with slides exclusively...mom sent me slide film regularly(as needed) and it was prepaid with processing to Hawaii ..thats my recollection...i had the slides in a closet for years (same temp i suppose) and only a few years ago started to scan my slides and did scan all mine....there was some fading due to time but i was lucky enough to "improve" them with the software that came with the scanner a CANOSCAN 8400F (nothing fancy) in some cases i played around using that software as well as the Element 10 just to see if i could tweak the pictures more...i was lucky enough to have all my pictures come out good .

I really don't remember what kind it was we hauled that stuff in on the LST I was stationed on at the time . Thats been a long time ago...
