Inaccurate Depth Reading

I've had about 18 months on my XS now and am very pleased with its target ID features. When using the X-8 coil the depth reading is way off. It will show mid scale on coins at 2-3 inches and 1/4 scale on surface coins with the coil scrubbing the ground.
What settings can I set to get a more accurate reading without loosing depth?
By the way I'm comparing my new MXT that I won at a competition hunt to the XS. The XS with the X-8 coil will seperate coins next to trash better than the MXT with the 9.5 coil. So far I haven't compared deap targets, just coins down to 5" so far and the XS responds better. More testing to do on the MXT.

It is common for coins within 3" or so of the surface to read as deeper than they really are. I got a quarter at 1" with the stock coil, the depth meter indicated about 5" & this wasn't caused by any unusual settings. Usually its not off that far but not perfectly accurate. HH, George (MN)

All the different coils give different depth readings, the smaller ones generally give deeper readings.. the stock coil is most accurate, but on coins less than 4 inches deep they are pretty much all off a bit.. target volume will tell you though

My personal feeling is,the depth gauge is one of weakest links, the Explorer has.Not very accurate, but use it,as a "guide" only.

I DO NOT like it, Sam I am!!! Luckily, the Ex has lots of other attributes that more than make up for it!!! I knocked my gain down a few notches and also listen to the strength of the signal in pinpoint mode to try and compensate for my liar liar pants on fire depth meter!!!

Never bother looking at it myself but don't forget the depth meter is reading the distance from the coil and not the depth in the ground.
