The Explorer is a pretty flexible detector.... but its NOT water proof. You can get a used Explorer fairly reasonable.... but having that coil cable going into and not around the shaft would be a concern if you lifted the wet coil above your box. What are you looking for and do you need a screen? If not there are water machines.... and even the Sov that you might look at. Otherwise you take a chance of dunking the NON waterproof machine. Will they work....absolutely. Id recommend an 8 inch coil.

The explorer handles wet salt beaches JUST FINE. So I can't imagine it not handling a "rice paddie" environment (which I assume would be like a marshy lake-side-shore-line, right?) I mean, those are even fresh water (right?) so "salt" wouldn't even play into the question, if so.

But as dewcon says, it's not waterproof (except for the coil, of course, which you can dunk in-&-out of water with no problems). You probably weren't thinking of going snorkeling or scuba with it anyhow, in a rice-paddie anyhow, doh.

What do you suspect is in a rice-paddie? If you're just angling for random field-worker laborer losses, then .... in my opinion, that's going to be a lonely hunt indeed. If I were in Vietnam, knowing how old the country is (compared to the USA), I'd be thinking of other spots to hit. But that's just me :)

To all you guys,

the rice paddies dry up when the rain season stops. it drys up and leaves cracks in the ground. so there is plenty to hunt. What, only time will tale. Right know I would call them RELICS. Bullets, and the army of both sides carried into battle. I believe I have some virgin area. Thats stuff is all ways good.. My father inlaw says no one has been in the village or on his property with a metal detector and no one has talk about. So time will tell. If you dont dig there will no reward to you.

Good luck on your quest for "relics". However, always be aware of the possibility of unexploded ordinance that very possibly could be there, and can still be deadly......

Thank you C&R HUNTER. I will approach it with caution. My Father inlaw is going to talk to all of the farmer to find out what they have found in Rice Padies in the last 40 year. That should give us a few ideals. I hope the E.O.D. is very small. I do know there were a few battles out there. It was a very large V.C. area. I been reading up on the site. Old army maps and stuff.

Why would you want to hunt for bullets and stuff from the vietnam era (not even 50 yrs. old) ? Certainly there must be sites in Vietnam that have more than THAT ? I'm only 15 min. from a major USA military base, that saw THOUSANDS of troops train annually (boot-camp, etc..) during the vietnam era. And I can go there, any-day-of-the-week, and dig millions of bullets, cr*p, junk, ordinance, etc... (oh sure, and an occasional 1969 memorial or whatever). But why hunt for that stuff? I hone in on older sites.

there is other items that I will be looking for. We' ll be looking when we talk to the other families in the are.

don't know why i wore my class ring to viet nam but i lost it the first night there. we slept on the beach at cam rahn bay so if you're ever in that area or near any beaches you could find some gold. good luck.

I finally bought a detector. A Minelab Explore S.E . Paid Kelly detector's the sale price for it. Also got a RNB LITHIVM ML2900 RECHARGER. MINE LAB POINTER 25 FOR FREE,A 12'X10" SEF COIL,plus allot of other stuff. they have good deals and good prices. I have shopped from them before. All way leave there happy. It doesn't hurt to walk. Will be her in a few weeks after stopping off in Hawaii. Then l have to play with for a couple of days and refresh myself with it then I will be ready for BEN LUC.

Have a good time what ever you hunt for and find........ Tom ca..........Maybe he will find some Dog Tags and other personal materials.

Hope you keep us posted Bob. Will be interesting to hear about your finds ..

First of all, I do'nt really know what I am going to find. But during my research I have located 3 U.S. Army base camp. There was one on the north east side of the bridge which was there to pull duty guarding the bridge,2) We found the headquarters for the one of the battalions located in the middle of town (BEN LUC).3)We found one 4 clicks north of town. We think we found one more Army camp. The first 3 are confirm. Then we found a ARVN CAMP and according to the villagers there was about 125 men there. so what I will find is Relics. I ask my PAPA to ask if they see anybody with metal detectors the said no. The are some farms with the V.C used to hide. I expect to fine some items there. The farmers main concern is dint destroy the rice crop. I told them we would do the Paddie after they harvest their rice. they O.K. So when my detector gets here "A hunting we will go" I will keep you posted. If you know anybody who served with the 9 Infanrty Division let them know what I would like to be doing and if they have any informtion please it on.

This weekend during the leg research we found another ARVN Base Camp. We taking to the villagers and found out no ones been there asking about it except us. Sounds like a virgin spot. They left in a hurt April 29th 1995. 24hrs from the take over of Saigion. They did say that the VC/NVA camp came there and filled up there truck. Still I fill we should find something. Dont know what but it has to be something. Still dont have my detector yet. Going to Virginia in September and pick it up. Dont fill like paying 450.00 for shippment and 40% custom taxes. Thats almost half what I paid paying for my early ticket. Plus i'll be there for my granddaughter and my grandson's birthday. By the way I ordered 2 metal detectors for them. Theyll be happy. We still have to check with the peoples committe and get permission. My father in law is working on that. Someone ask me if I will be looking for bulletts. Yes because they are brass I think. People over in this country makes about 200.00 a month. I dont know what brass sell for but I'm sure there is money in it. I have in laws who are very poor. We can get a couple of relatives a day to go with us to carry the bucket. Nothing will be thrown away. So now we have 5 camp to seach, Father in laws fram, and 4 other farm to search. That should last 2 or 3 month. Oh I forgot the battle fields.
