In response to Minelab's e-mail to me concerning the special transmit circuitry in the coil....

Art (NWOH)

New member
In case you wondered, Minelab is listening......

They verified that there is a recieve preamp in the coil....powered as I said from the TX side.

The recieved signal gets a power boost to improve signal to noise ratio and is transmitted to the box.

Perhaps Minelab and myself took each other out of context. The power increase they were talking about is apparently in the recieved signal, which I agree with.

My apologies to Minelab for takeing their advertising statements out of context.

Takes a good man to stand up if he was wrong...Now that you have me confused with the technical aspects...Is the Tornado a superior coil workwise( depth etc.) we all know its lighter and sleeker..And if so how is it better...

When the Tornado coils came out, some said they were a little better than the BBS10, while others said that they couldn't see any difference other than weight.

Apparently weight was about the only factor. Otherwise pretty much the same coil.

I'm inclined to believe that slight differences from coil to coil was about the only factor involved in any percieved performance differences. It is virtually impossible to make any two electronics components or assemblies perfectly alike.

All the Sov coils are functionally similar in design. Size, weight, shape, and characteristics of the window of detection dictate how well suited any particular one will be for any given purpose and location.

I would have to try 5 or 10 coils of each kind (BBS and Tornado) on the same detector and with the same settings over the same targets to determine if the "average" coil of each kind was really different or not.

Not much of an answer, I guess.

As I believe there are hotter units and coils out there so its a point well taken....Always liked the BBS1000 myself so for a couple of ounces see no change in my coil selection in the near future...

well thats good to know Art. so does that mean that these coils will give us a slight edge on other brand coils? i got the 10" and i just ordered the 8 "coil. hope they come out with a 5" and a 12.5".

Hi Art, do you have any feedback on the Coiltek WOT 15"? Thanks very much and Happy New Year! de John the Wirechief, CET.

No. Never used one. Never will.

I have an issue with size and weight. I used a 14" Detech for a while off and on. Just too much.

The beach hunters like them (WOT)for covering ground. I hunt dirt (often with trash) and want something that feels better in size, weight, and inertia (affects coil control).

About all I can say.

Ok mighty fine Art and I have been trying a WOT on the GT. The GT is a whole different ballgame compared to the X-TERRA 50. I am in the learning curve on the GT right now. Is NWOH where your located or your ham radio callsign? Just curious. I thank ya Art and I want to use the GT and WOT for dryland relic hunting. God Bless and Happy New Year Art! de John the Wirechief, CET. KA5QYR.

I forgot Art to ask if you know what the power output of the GT is in milliwatts? Aren't all detector transmitters limited to 100 milliwatts max? Thanks again Art. John, CET.

Northwest Ohio. Don't have a ham ticket. Almost got one a long time ago. Still have a HW-101 stashed away that I only listened with. Drag it out once in a while to cook the gas out of the tubes.

Rough guess....

Don't know about that 100mw thing. That was for radio freq xmiters.

Sov pulls about 50 ma @ 12V with most coils (more with Detech) and about 25 ma without the coil. Discounting whatever the rx preamp uses, you would have .025 X 12 = 300mw. This is energy used in producing a magnetic field and not a free space electromagnetic waveform, so I don't know if the old walkie talkie stuff applies.

Tried looking it up one time, but couldn't really find anything clear cut about it in the FCC rules.

Don't know what my tape demagnetizer uses, but sure has to be a lot more. Know my stereo (same freq as the Sov) puts out a lot more. Again this is magnetic, not electromagnetic radiation.

For my hunting of parks, ballfields, church yards and schools I find the WOT is too big and those that have tried mine feel the same way too. Now I hear for beach hunting most like the WOT and never had a chance to try any beach hunting myself. What I do find for a big coil that works excellent and to me I got better depth too was the S12 Intruder coil of Sun Rays as I have dug deep, good target separation and not so big and clumsy yet light weight.

Ok Art many thanks for your input and that HotWatter 101 is sort of a collectors item now. I've got a DX-60B thats a fun AM rig. Metal detector electronics is really very interesting. It's a great hobby and it's fun to find anything that is old. I found a hoard yesterday in my backyard, there are so many I can't even count them and all in one hole! I will BCNU again Art and I wish you would have gotten your ticket, your not too late yet you know. 73 de John the Wirechief out Blackwell way. KA5QYR, CET.

Hi Rick and thanks for the input on the WOT. I am just beginning to experiment with mine and that is why I posted about them. It is nice to meet you and will chat with you again. de John the Wirechief, CET.

Hey de John...

Probably should do this email, but.....

Was really getting into radio down in Nebraska, and got to be a CB nut. Started getting into HAM because CB was getting awful trashy.....you know what I mean.

Passed the code test administered by an advanced class guy from Murray and was waiting for the written test to come in. Before I got to take the test, I got shipped to upper Michigan.

Didn't have any good place to hang an antenna, and the work schedule was beating me to death so really didn't have the time anymore. Kind of got out of the whole thing.
Could have gotten a 1st class lisence too if I had just went down to the FCC office and took the test. Really hate myself now.
