In need of a new machine !

I just joined this forum this morning so I would like to shout out a big HELLO to you all  I used to do a fair amount of hunting 11-12 years ago but when the dark cloud divorce decended upon me I had to sell my machine (along with most of my toys) and give it up for a long while . I have been happily remarried for the past 10 years and it is time to get back in the field. I had a good machine (Whites) back in the day but as I said earlier, it was sold to obtain much needed cash at that time. I am getting a really sweet tax refund this year so I have been doing my internet homework on all the variuos machines out there. As I said earlier that I had a Whites back then therefor I went to my local dealer to check them out. WOW ! ....What a difference the machines have underwent over the last decade :surprised: Every model that is worth looking at has the (IMO) needless multifunction, high tech digital screens.......URGGGGGGH ! I hate that crap on a detector. I want a machine that is more "old schhol" that puts the money in the performance.....not fancy gadgets, gizmos, bells & whistles. After being dissapointed I struck Whites and most others off my list. I have discovered the Tesoro lines and like what I am seeing ! I have narrowed my choice to either a Vaquero or Tejon and would like some input on these two machines. I live in Fredericksburg, VA and will be hunting relics, coins and jewelry in various soil conditions. Some areas I will go will be fairly hot ground so a manual ground balance is a must. I have read many wondeful reviews on the Tejon and Vaquero and I just can not make up my mind if the extra cash for the Tejon is worth it. I am not new to hunting and consider myself fairly exsperienced (but no expert) so I am shopping for a machine that will perform at a higher level than a beginer's machine. I really like the lifetime warrenty with the Tesoro products......looks like they stand behind thier products well. I appreciate any and all of your input :beers:

just got ask your self what type of hunting your going to do if its coins to me the vaq would be a better selection or if you want releics the tejon would hit deeper and have had both the vaq is a little lighter and outfitted with the 12 x 10 coil you will get the depth you want but you will lose sensitivity to smaller objects now for coins get the 5,75" coil and it suck'em right out of the ground practicly, whatever you decide either choice is good if your familiar with v-8 engines at all the vaq is like a 383 magnum and the tejon is like a max wedge 413! just my 2 cents worth on things!

Welcome!

Of the two machines I'd go with the Tejon. Even Tesoro company says it's deeper than the V and the extra features over the V make it well worth the extra bucks.

Know what you mean about the dark cloud and then a happy follow on! Not so uncommon!! Now .. if we can get some of our combined brood out of college the budget will be looking better.

Please spend some time and read through the posts on this forum over the last month or two about the Tejon and Vaquero. I have not used a Vaquero but have a Cibola and a Tejon. I like both. The Tejon is a good detector for me, but I am in fairly mild ground most of the time. There are some opinions that the Vaquero may be a better choice in hotter ground; and Fredericksburg, VA is starting to get towards hotter than average ground conditions. Hotter soil meaning higher mineralization frequently seen as red or yellow clay mixed in with the top soil or as a layer.

Another thought, if you liked the detector you had back then and it performed well for you, maybe consider picking up a used one in good condition. Then go forward from there as you get reacquainted with detecting.

In any case, Welcome aboard here on the forum.

Just bought a Vaq today on ebay today. It was a demo, got a great deal @ 338.00.
Won't sleep till it gets here, then won't sleep cause it's here.. "smile"

hopskipy, you'll love that vaq, don't worry about depth it will go deep and in some situations in higher minerilized ground the vaq is a little more stable than the tejon

HERE ON THIS FORUM RICHARD BACKWOOD
HAS A TESORO COBIA FOR $260.00

buy it from a dealer that knows how to use it. Its not difficult to learn, but there are some tips and hints that will help learn it much faster. The Tejon has a proven reputation as being the deepest machine they have every made, and with a life time warranty, you cant go wrong.

I use my Vaquero for the same type of hunting you mentioned. It does it all for me and does it quite well. Not uncommon to dig coins (silver or clad) at 6-8", deepest so far was 10.5". Found what I hope is a octagonal rifle barrel at a old plantation, it is still in the ground at 26" waiting for dry weather to return to the place.. Can't comment on the Tejon as I haven't used one.

Well after doing much research and going to my local dealer, I am leaning heavily toward the vaquero. The Tejon I think does'nt offer that much more of performance to justify the extra $130 IMO. My dealer also carries the Fisher line and one particular model caught my eye as well.......The Fisher 1270x. Does anyone have any opinions/exsperience with one of these machines ? The last MD I had several years ago was a Whites' 5900DI Pro. It was a pretty good machine and I want my new detector to be at least as good (preferably better) my current budget is around $550 so that should get me into good machines for sure.

i had one briefly and i got a feeling that it will go deep but the pinpoint is a little wider than i choose to like very sensitive machine the onlty way i could conduct any testing had to bring it outside because it is very sensitive air test with coin .25 on the ground with stock 8" coil about foot of the ground but the down side weighs about 3.5lbs very simalar features to the tejon i almost sometimes kick my butt for selling, frequency runs at 8.2 khz and you can really hear the whisper or faint signal with this!

I just got the Tejon in today and I LOVE it!!!! I havent used it yet but it is damn pretty... LOL... I really like all the shinny knobs. It looks like it can go real real deep. LOL....

have been faced with the question of whether to get a T or a V, and there has been many a discussion on that subject. From the very beginning there was many a verbal battle over which was best. You have to consider what kind of dirt ya got, whether ya hunt coins/ buttons,or both(of course) and hear a hundred opinions and ideas discussed with all hands wanting to help you make the "right" decision. It was voiced from the beginning, "V is more stable, T not so stable because gain is jacked up" "T threshold is "scratchy and irratic", "V is smooth and steady" and on and on it goes. I have been using a T for 3 years or so now(good dirt) and love it, and my buddy has a V and watching him, with it causes me to wish I had a V.I saw him dig a thin silver 1800s'/love token dime that was just so unbelievably deep that had I not seen it I would not have believed it. Seen many a pic of buttons the T dug at fantastic depths too..Truth is I wish I had booth and if I wasn't so old now and over the hill with not so many hunting days left, I would order me a V tomorrow. That is pretty much the way it is with many of the guys at present with the Tand V situation. They are torn between the two like you. With the bad dirt you have you may want to if possible and have a dealer anywhere nearby, get him to show you some in the dirt, action before you decide. If your dirt was not so bad I would suggest the T but, best thing to do is get all the on hands info you can first. I doubt I helped any, but thought it only fair to clue you to some of the "Jaw" that has taken place..Any Tesoro you get will be backed up by the absolute best warrantee and service to be had! That means little or no cost for any repairs or tuneups. Oh, yeah, whichever , with the T or the V, manage to get the 5.75 concentric coil too! You will be glad you did! Happy Hunting, and it's good you made it back! God Bless!

Crazedgunmen: I owned a fisher 1266X for years and it was a great detector for bullets. but small items like buttons gave me a headache. And my 1266X was like swinging a log. It was a stiff machine like the new garretts. But Depth was great But not as deep as the tesoro machines. also going hot with it was almost impossible it just got too erratic at just half sensativity.

The best advice I can give is read all the reviews you can find. on these detectors your interested in. And don't get fooled by all these fancy gadgets because most of them do very little. First try and find one thats great on depth under almost any conditions. hows battery life is there a very good warranty? This is a must have no matter what. You well want a manual ground balance if you travel from state too state or even if your own soil is hot, What kind of coils do they have for the detector? How about a screen that tells you what the item is before you dig it. lol whites says they have one but I guess I couldn't wait to dig that bucket full of aluminum in my garage lol. This is a sales pitch period. I owned one of those and maybe it was right half the time. Price what do you want too spend $1000 or 1500 most of these have a tv screen which I never found all that useful. depth gauge? Now this is a waste because if your like me it doesn't matter how deep it is if the signal is good I'm digging it weather it's 5 inches or a foot! Just remember there are better machines out there cheaper than a grand or more. I have a 1970 lemans crank windows no air and my wife has a ford explorer hers is loaded with options. Mine runs just as good if not better than hers. those options are nice but does not improve performance. I purchased a vaquero which is better than any of those grand or more machines for a $1000 dollars less. SORRY TO PREACH JUST TRYING TO HELP A FELLOW DETECTOR OUT. TAKE CARE.

I have pretty much ruled out the Tejon at this time due to the fact that it may get a little "jittery" in my hot Virginia soil. I think the Vaquero will be more stable/consistant . I do not think the Tejon will offer that much more in performance than the Vaquero for the extra $120 in cost over the Vaquero. My local dealer also carries Fisher and I am very interested in the 1270x. It looks like it might have the stability of the Vaquero but not be quite as "jumpy" as the Tejon in hot dirt. The 1270 also has very nice disc. options and I did like the ergo's in my hand. Seems like a very solid machine. I'll have to do some more reaserch on the 1270 before I lay down the cash but I am getting very close in my search......AND HAVING ALOT OF FUN WHILE AT IT !!!!

I LOVE SHOPPING FOR STUFF

Not very often you run into someone you outbid on ebay. Small internet world.I did bid high (375.99) on that vaq, it comes with warranty card.I'll say I'm sorry, but you know I don't really mean it (smile).I do wish you the best with your new one, I hope I'll have success with this one.
Happy hunting !!!
