In a Slump...

Last sunday I hunted in St. Louis oldest park with Guvner, Ted, Bill Ill (with GoldDigger also at another park). I did'nt find anything to brag about. I've been in a slump for about two weeks now. It seems after each winter layoff I have to re-learn some of the finer points of detecting. I have to admit at this park nobody did great last sunday. But I expected something there.
My settings are Iron Mask -8 or -10, 32 auto sens, deep recovery, and Gain 6.
I know this park has been hit by experienced hunters who know what they are doing, they hit it hard. I also know that the ground conditions change each time it rains and dries.
I've made some really nice finds with the Explorer. Just want to know what I'm doing wrong.

You need to find a park where Big Mike and Golddigger don't hunt 24/7. Then relax. The good coins will come. 32 auto might be a bit much if you're trying for stability. Maybe a lower manual sensitivity (22) will give you a more consistant barometer to relearn what you think you've forgotten. Or just crank the semi-auto down to say 24.
Just the first things that come to mind... Guvner..

Try different things all the time. Try manual and see if it helps. Set the tone variability to 10(this helped me alot). Scrub the ground with that coil. Swing slow and then slow it down some more. If you set the detector up and leave it for your whole hunt your not taking advantage of this machine. I still have one site that I know is loaded with old coins but the explorer has not found one coin over 4" deep. The soil is the problem. Two blocks away I can find coins at 8-10" deep. Different soil. But when I figure this site out I'm going to kill it. HH

I pretty much agree with Guv on the things to do.But I would use 28 or 29 auto,7 gain, and go back to the smart screen and open it up just a tad. As for hunting the same areas that Big Mike and Golddigger hunt,it is like a Hoover has gone thru and just sucked all the coins up. But here is the Kicker, you have to put the time in the field. Count the hours these two put in and compare them to the hours that you put in.

Time and trial... I usually get out on sundays, these guys use every available minute. Like I said, I have forgot a few things in the winter layoff and need to re-learn. Also, Park conditions change, one day great readings the next hardly a good target. Attitude is the biggest thing though, a wrong mindset and you wont find a thing. I just got frustrated sunday, I wanted to be in the game so badly.
Thanks for the response
Ken

Hey Ken, don't take it to heart bud. Everybody has a bad day. But if you hunt as much as the hoovers do you would call 5 silvers a bad day.
