Important tip for newbies

My nephew purchased his first detector this summer. I showed him everything about his detector. A couple of days ago he told me that he hasn't found much since the first time we went hunting. He thought something was wrong with his detector. I told him to bring it over. I told him to find the coins in my coin garden. After all they are marked and in a strait line. He started swinging and couldn't get a signal. I watched in amazement as he forgot everything I told him. There he was swinging his coil a foot off the ground like a pendulum. I said that it's hard for a detector to find a coin 18 inches in the ground. I showed him (again) proper coil technique and told him to overlap his sweeps by 50% or more. He then found all the coins. He was happy! This may be the most important thing you can do is have a nice even low sweep. Overlapping your sweeps by at least 50%. I have watched youtube vids on metal detecting and some are jokes on proper coil sweeping.

I agree - as I have shown and taken newbies out on a first hunt. They started out alright, but some ended up looking like they were trying to weed down the grounds in a "Who can mow the field first" contest. In such a hurry but some need to slow down and take time with a little thinking process. Some didn't realize how far behind they left me.

Hi, being a very 'newbie',I have yet to receive my new F2, khouse you said some videos on you tube are a joke are there any good ones showing proper technique?

In my opinion he's lucky having you as a mentor. I still say and always will the the true treasure in this hobby is the people who do it !!!

Type in "scdigger" he has some good vids
Type in "metal detector the movie" You'll see bad coil technique and they hunt cemeteries. Pretty bad times 2.
