impedance mis-match

My electronics background is mainly in RF, with some digital, but very limited AF. My question is this; I read here and there that some think it's better to use 500 ohm headphones on metal detectors instead of low-impedance ones. They mention no limiter is needed with them. From my limited point of view, this only creates a major impedance miss-match, and should be avoided. Audio level will drop, distortion may be induced and overall performance will suffer, as compared to a set of 8 ohm headphones plugged into a metal detector with a typical 8 ohm output.
What do you guys out there think? Gogogopher, Monte, others please state your opinions. Thanks, Ron.
