impaired hearing and Tesaro

blacktoe

New member
I currently own an Ace 250 and a Fisher F4 and after lurking here for awhile am interested in a Tesaro Vaquero. I keep the 250 for my grandson to use. It has outrageous volume but I can no longer stand the belltone. I like my F4 but I have turn up the volume all the way on my headphones to hear it, without phones I can barely hear it. I don't want to rely on tid all the time.

Does Tesaro have enough volume and threshold to where even hearing impaired can hear the whisper signal? Also I would have to have the hightone Vaquero as I have the most loss in lowtones. You can loud whisper in front of me and I can't hear it.
I can hear women better than men.

Also what does single tone and VCO mean? From what you guys find apparently not everything sounds the same? Do you think I could hear the differences to the changes? It really sucks not to hear many things others hear. I have been a bodyman for over 30 years and learned too late to protect my hearing.

I am also looking at a Minelab exterra 70 and if any of you have used one I would also appreciate any comments on that concerning loudness and performance.

Thank you in advance,
Steve

Well I have a 50% loss of hearing in my left ear. I would suggest a good pair of headphones with any detector you get. Seperate volume controls for each ear works wonders.

I have both the Vaquero and the X-Terra 70. I have no problems hearing either machine, In some ways the Vaquero is easier. Since it is a beep and dig machine. I actually find it easier to hunt with, because I concentrate more on the hunt not a VID.

Good luck to you with the detector and the ears, Beale.

I don't know what headphones you are using but if they are the inexpensive type you may want to consider the purchase of something like dual adjustable Killer Bees. My hearing is not great but there is no way I can turn up the volume all the way on any headphones that I currently use.

Steve, I field tested the Vaquero for Tesoro and loved it. I still use mine. You can read my report on Tesoro's web site or in their MDI magazine. It is an honest report. I do not submit half truth's or Lie's. As for headphones, have you tried the Black Widow's made my Detector Pro? I use them because I can hear extremely faint signals. Many of my customers use them for the reason you state; hearing loss. Dual volume controls, limiter switch, stereo/mono switch, detent volume knobs, detent headband adjuster, extreme outside noise reduction and a lifetime warranty. They are made to accept replaceable parts should you ever damage them. They work with any detector I sell but I do not recommend them for the Minelab Explorer. Better recommendation for that model. Call me if I can answer any questions. Good hunting, David@Dixie

I can't hear my wife most of the time:biggrin: yet inexpensive Calrad headphones work just fine on my Tesoro machines.

Separate volume controls is a good idea... my right is worse than my left ear.... (the best motorcycles exhaust on the right;)).

Boost mode on the sensitivity brings up those deep signals so they are same as shallow.

But it's not really possible for us to assess your needs well over the net...

Do you have a nearby dealer, or club where you could try Tesoro machines for yourself?

That would be best.

Hi there,
I have a Vaq, use Sun Ray Pro gold headphones, you should have volume to spare using these headphones, yes the faintest of signals are not missed.
Dual Volume controls and a Limiter switch .With the limiter switch off, closer target to the surface louder it gets, deeper fainter signal, With limiter switch on you are hard pressed to pick up changes in depth of the target, think with the sun rays you would have both options to use. It is a top combo to use,

All the best Holey Dollar/ Dave..................

Hi Blacktoe. Sorry for your hearing loss but the others have given good
advice about the Black Widow or Killer Bee headphones with dual
volume controls. These better phones with 150 ohm sensitivity will
enable you to hear the deeper, fainter signals. I've tried a club member's
Vaquero and it's sound quality and volume are great sounding to me,
but I don't have hearing loss, thanks to goodness and good luck.
By the way, VCO stands for voltage controlled oscillator which means
that as the center of the coil nears the target there will be an increase
in volume and tonal pitch to enable you to better locate the target as
it centers under the coil. Also, single tone is just that, a strong, solid
sound of one frequency over a target. Also, you'll probably hear the high
tones better, as you've suggested.
HH and good luck!

Thanks guys,, At this time I am using the free cheap headphones that came with the detectors, they both have dual volume control. I have been looking at the better headphones and have to consider I live in SE Ga. It gets HOT here, so the sweat factor has to be considered too. So far the Sunray looks like the lightest phones.

Thanks Wayne for explaining single tone and vco.

I don't live close to a dealer or club so can't try out different detectors. So far I have only found one guy that detects here. He told me he was the only one till I came along. He told me he had cleaned out the old high school football field but I have found over $30 there. So much for cleaned out lol. There's a lot of old farmhouses here but this area was settled around the mid 1860 or so, no colonial and Sherman marched above us.

I still don't really under single tone. How do you know when to dig? The reason I like the Vaquero is by the chart it looks like the best all around detector that has ground balance and uses just 1 9V battery. We have pretty heavy mineral ground. On my F4 I have to set balance almost all the way over to get it.

Also thanks for not taking offence when I misspelled Tesoro lol.

Hay Steve,

Single tone on the V is sweet because it has what they call Silent Search.

That means you can hunt with less noise. I liked S Search right away because

I was tired of all the noise the previous one made. It gave me a head ach.

With the single tone, you listen for a good sound. You have to practice to

know what it sounds like. You need to know what the bad ones sound like also.

But a steel washer sounds good!!!!!:O OH NO!!!!!

No fear. Just thumb the disc a little and "AHA........That's a tight piece of iron or steel".

If it go's beep or trys to reject in one direction and double beeps in the other, it's long

or on the surface. Practice to know the difference by raising the coil ect.

If it's long and discriminates right out, it's a nail or screw or short wire. If it doesn't

disc out very quick, it may be copper, and so on and so on.

I could write for a long time trying to describe how I do it. I'm sure others do it different.

But I have found what works for me.

I have surpassed my first goals as MD'er in many ways, so I feal I'm doing something

right.

HH,

I know what you mean with the hearing problem. My right ear is much better so I purchased the Rattler earphone as it is only one earphone. Works great with my V and I hardly have the volume turned up. I thought about getting a set of earphones with adjustable volume. However...I also thought, If I turn up the volume high enough to hear out of my left ear could I possibly be injuring my remaining hearing out of my left ear?? Good Luck.

With most of the higher end phones they have dual volume. My Sun Rays do and I am glad of it. My left ear I run at a higher volume than the right. I also have a limiter switch in my earphones. I keep this on to limit the loud hits down, Beale.
