Every baseball game that I am shooting at I always have parents giving me their email address so I can send them photos of their children. Most offer me a few bucks for my efforts but so far I haven't taken any money for it. I've been turning it over in my head that there has to be a way that I could turn this into some extra cash. Last night at our tournament I noticed a guy with full blown professional camera setup shooting all the games. He was also handing out fliers for his sports photography business that does exactly what I had been thinking about. The math is kind of staggering when I did it in my head, here is what I came up with. Last night we had 5 games going on, that's 10 teams with 12 kids each for a total of 120 children from roughly 120 families. After looking at this guys web site I guesstimated that the average parent would spend between $25 and $50 for his photo packages. Judging from the buzz in the stands I would venture a guess that close to half the parents will order some photos. So if 60 parents spend just the minimum $25 then that means this guy will take in around $1,500 for what amounts to a 2 hour photo session. Now I know the guy has a ton of work to do after the shoot but any way you slice it the money is better than what I am making at my current job. The cool part is that you could do this year round with virtually any sport or public event where there are children. Heck, I'm already running a web design/hosting service so I wouldn't have to worry about that part of the business. The only downside is that I would have to upgrade my photo equipment to more professional stuff. But you know, I don't really see that as a bad thing ... hehehe. Now if I can just get the wife to buy into it I seriously think I can make this thing fly. So my goal is to be doing a small, low cost version of what this guy is doing by the end of the year. Anyone see any reason why this couldn't work?
