I'm Stoked!

I had to go into work in the AM for a few hours Monday and as a result got some comp time off on Tuesday --- so I took the opportunity to dirt fish some. I went to a local ball practice field that I have hunted several times with my V3i. I found 12 clad dimes, 16 pennies, 4 clad quarters, 1 1942 silver quarter and what I thought was a Kennedy half. After I got them home and started looking closer I discovered that the "half" was really a large cent. It is corroded and I can't make out the date just yet, but this was my first silver with the CTX and my first LC ever!! Love this hobby!! I was using GH's open program with a low trash setting. I think I shall return to this place ....

Great job my first coin with the ctx was a 1831 large cent. Sure hope to find more.

that is what keeps me hunting,,,,, the surprises you get !!!!!! WTG!!!!

Just curious, what did you find in your same ballfield the several times you hunted it with your V3I?

I had found only a bunch of clad, some football equipment screws, etc. No silver, nothing old. Now to be fair it is a big field, but the area I found the LC in was hunted pretty hard.

Those are super finds!! Congrats!!

I hope you get a date off the LC...

Thanks! Me, too. I have it soaking in some olive oil right now, but I don't hold out much hope. Maybe in a week I can see the date. If anyone has some first hand experience cleaning these things I'd like to know how you did it.

It will take longer than a week if the severely corroded IH I dug last year is any indication. It took my IH a year in olive oil and with some gentle rubbing I could see the date 1888. It came out of a field that has had cattle and fertilizer applied over a span of several years. Don't get impatient and try to clean as you may damage the coin more and never know the date. When I first started metal detecting I thought I would get cute. I had dug a 1910 wheat penny and could barely see the date. My brother had said put some hot sauce on it and all will be fine. That's what I did and in just a matter of a few minutes what little raised date the penny had disappeared on the penny. Good luck with your coin.

Thanks! I will try to be patient!

Congrats that is awesome

Congrats on the silver and the LC. When it comes to "soaking" the copper coins.... if you start to become impatient........consider how long it took for it to get that way! Nice recoveries! HH Randy

That is an excellent point, Randy! Thanks!

I have first hand knowledge on how NOT to clean the LC don't use CLR it ruins it. My hunting buddy had me soak it a few hours in CLR it started to pit. He felt bad and bought me one off eBay buts it's not the same I didn't find it.

Appreciate the info. I did stick it in a little CLR for about 30 seconds, then thought better of it and washed it off. I think I'll take the slow route.
