Well, I finally broke down and ordered an AT Pro. It is scheduled for delivery tomorrow. I have an Ace 250 and 350, and am quite familiar with them. How much of a learning curve is there for the pro mode?

I had mine for a couple weeks now and I'm still getting used to it, although this machine has me pulling goods out of the ground that I went over dozens of times with my other detectors. You might find yourself wanting to switch back to standard mode but I suggest once you try Pro Mode to keep at it till you learn it. As with any machine you will get the hang of it over time with enough use, I put about 50 hours on mine and I'm confident with it already.

Well, considering you are well rehearsed with the characteristics of the ACE Series, the standard mode is very similar to the ACE series. The pro mode takes the detector to a different plateau, where audio and TID is used to help you make a bettere calculated decision as to whether the target is junk or not. Being that you already know how the notching works, using the pro should come quite easy. And its good to know that you don't lose any depth by increasing the discrimination, like you do on a lot of metal detectors using knobs to add discrimination. Good luck! If you have any issues, you know where to ask.

Darren, the biggest thing you will need to learn is the Iron settings.
Turning on and off the iron tones will help ID a lot of trash like bottle caps at the beach.
If you are a relic hunter the iron discrimination for the first part of the scale will be useful to you.

Be aware the AT PRO is a high performance machine and it is like it is on steroids.
You can set the sensitivity so high it will become unstable.
It takes a while for you to work up to 100% sensitivity settings and still understand what is going on.
Not every place you use it will allow that high of a setting.
Start out at about 75% sensitivity for the first few hours of detecting with it.

Good advice Willee, I've only had my pro about 2 weeks now and for the first few times out I used the std mode because the pro mode was just to much of a bite for me starting out with it.
But for the last few times out I have been using the pro mode pretty much all the time and it's really coming to me of what it's telling me and I'm really starting to like it a lot I'm actually picking the coins out of areas with a lot of trash and some even in the same holes just a couple days ago I found an old nail and an old roofing tack and then got to my coin so I'm really impressed with the at pro.
As Willee said it's got plenty of power I been running my sen about 3 bars less than full and it's much quieter and still gets good depth too.
So as one at pro newbie to another I think you're gonna love it I know I do, also if the arm cuff don't go back enough for you then you might want to check out the gizmo it makes a world of diff for me.

Thanks for the advice, guys! It came in today. ( I now understand what everyone is talking about with the O-rings being a little tricky.) I'm headed out to try to get a little swinging in before it gets dark. Wish me luck!!

Good luck with the ATPro darrenb. It will open your eyes up with its audio and other features. I have some good advice for U on your new machine, Do not open up the control box and try and make yourself a backlight for night hunting unless U want to win another idiot award:rofl: This is a great detector for the price. Its all good , give yourself some time and frustration like alot of metal detectors and I think the ATPro will satisfy U in the end........

I used to be a big fan of the belltone on my Gtax550...BUT now that I have been using Pro mode, I really like the way the tones are working. I switched back to my old Gtax550 for a few minutes for fun the other day, and I realized just how much "tighter" and more informative the Pro mode on the AT Pro is. Of course I have much yet to learn with the Pro, but having a bit of previous Garrett experience, it didn't take too long before I started to get the hang of the Pro mode. I have found some great coins (and a couple silver rings) with the Pro...at sites I was sure I had beaten to death. Coins with junk metal in the same hole, etc!
My advice about the learning curve is to go slow, and dig a bunch of different signals to get the feel of it. Give it time, it's worth it!!!
