I'm risking my compadre. (Please help)

I am on the verge of up-grading (swapping coils) in my compadre. I found an ad on the internet where it shows how to do it. Whould you all agree that this will work. The compadre works really fine but I am still in doubt about how well it will perform with a 9 X 8 coil. What would you all recommend me to do? Is this ad on the Tesoro forum trustworthy. Thank you all.

I don't know for sure but I think the Compadre is a different freq than the other Tesoros. I have heard that the Tiger Shark .and the Comparde operate at 12kHz and the other uMax's at 10. This may be close enough for it to work. If you do it you should reground balance it. As you know it void your warranty.
I personally think the 5.75 coil is the perfect coil for the comparde.

I've got a Compadre with a 9x8 coil on it. It was modified before I got it but I was thinking of getting a Compadre and trying the 9 x 8 on it before this one came up for sale. With the 9 x 8 coil it is still very light and easy to swing. It is a standard uMax 9 x 8 coil. Works very well.

I like the 9 x 8 for tot lots and ball fields. Right in front of school entrances or along the walk way entrances to play areas, I find I would like a smaller coil than the 9 x 8. I'll hunt those areas with a detector that I have a smaller coil for.

If you hunt real trashy areas with your Compadre, I would not do the mod. If you spend most of your time hunting areas that are not real trashy the larger coil covers more area and is still sensitive to very small pieces of metal. Depends on how you are going to use it.

If you do modify it, it may need ground balance adjustment. And yes, warranty may be voided.

Pictures of the Compadre with the 9 x 8 and of a coin I found with this set up.

My favorite all-purpose coil for most Tesoro's (that I like and own and use) is a 7" concentric. A second good pick is the 5

Thanks Monte for chiming in!

I just went back and read all of Lindabonita's posts ... maybe should have done that before.

I have to agree with Monte's suggestion about adding a detector that has ground balance and interchangeable coils. Looks like you have an Ace 250 too (no adjustable ground balance). If you have funds to spend on a new coil, you may want to look at adding a used detector that can ground balance. It may not be much difference in price compared to a coil.

If you go through with the mod, the internal adjustments take very little movement to change how the detector acts a lot. It is very easy to over shoot on them and end up way out of whack.

My opinion is that if the Compadre still came with the 7 inch concentric coil that it had a few years back instead of the 5.75 that it comes with now, it would be a better compromise for most conditions and I may not be playing with the 9 x 8 on it.
