Some of you may recall that I was fussing about my 1236X2 recently. It had gone into the dreaded "VCO Audio Skyrocket Mode," and was unusable for pinpointing. Thinking it was going back to the Fisher Shop, I was worried over some ingracious comments made about Fisher service just the other day. Seems someone had "issues" with the Fisher service department and had gotten the cold shoulder. Suppose it happened to me, right?
So I contacted Mike Scott, who was as good as ever. He put me on to Felix at Fisher Service, straightaway. He was good and professional and handled our initial service contact well. Felix said he would put me in the queue and call back in a few hours with my RA number. HE seemed like he genuinely gave a damn. Now I really was confused...
On the one hand, there's a guy who got the proverbial shaft from the FT Folks. On the other here was Felix, Super Service Guy.
SO I went home and tried the unthinkable - I put 2 new batteries in the 1236X2. I mean, what if I sent it to them and that was all it was? Felix's good work would be wasted and I would feel like an - - I hadda try it, you know?
Well, as you can guess the problems went away when fresh cells were in. Everything was as it should be.
I suspect the 1236X2 uses one 9V for the detection circuits and one for the audio. When I performed the battery check, it worked fine, because the audio battery was good. But the pinpoint feature, being part of the detection circuit, was whacked because THAT cell was low. Just a guess.
This is the point where I officially recognized my status as Big Dumb-A$$. Some people are big shots, others are just big, but not me. I'm an official Big Dumb A$$.
The oldest boo-boo in the book and I made it. Man, it will take me awhile to live this one down....
When Felix called back later, I told him all was well and how the light of reason had shone upon me, at last. Yes folks, you heard me right - - Felix called me back. I felt liberated.
When I told him my results, he said, "Well good, David. I'm glad it worked out. This saves you some trouble and money, and lets you get back to business. Make sure you tell all your buddies that I am here to help them if they ever need it, though, so give them my phone number!"
Hello! Did you hear that? He wants you to call him if you need help. That said, here is his number:
915-633-6192. Or you can call Fisher, 800-685-5050 and ask for Felix.
My thanks to Mike Scott, true to form as a good service manager. Thanks also to Felix, who didn't actually have to do anything - but was ready to. He also made the taste of eating crow tolerable.
As for the other guy, the one who had the bad experience? I'm beginning to think there were other things at play...
