I'm not really missing my 11" DD Stock Coil

Yesterday I unfortunately had to send in my malfunctioning 11" DD stock coil for my E-trac. It had been acting up and I had no idea what was wrong with it. I've got a separate post going on how that situation ends up. Could take between 2 to 4 weeks. The crappy part is that it was only six month old.

Anyway, so about five months ago I also bought a sun ray x-5 just for hunting trashy areas...basically I never used it. It just sat around collecting dust.

On any normal day with my 11" coil I'd pick out a large area and begin cruising along as I normally do looking for what might be out there as I'm sure most of you do. Usually when I'm done my arms, legs and back are a bit stiff. Just my opinion but I consider the E-Trac a tad bit on the heavy side. I'm a little guy so I may tend to feel it more than others.

Tonight I decided that it was time to put on my X-5 and get out there. My first thought was that if I were to head up to my usual spot (a middle school) that by the time I was done swinging that little coil over and over again that was my arm was going to be very tired. Man was I wrong. Not only was my detector lighter but what I noticed is how accurately it locked on to targets. Duh right, it's a smaller coil but I didn't expect to do so much successful hunting is such a small area. I mean I could stand almost in one spot and find target after target with little to no energy loss AND in an area that I had been generally over with with my regular 11" coil.

Using a sniper coil was a completely different for me. I never really knew (I'm relatively new to detecting) how much was around me when I took the time to stay put. Again, in areas that I had been over already. It was a really nice experience. It allowed me to relax and with the extra energy I was in a much better frame of mind for digging ALL signals...potential gold signals??? Where as before when covering vast fields I often found myself too sapped to dig em all.

So if you do not own a sniper coil and you are looking for a different experience once in a while I highly suggest getting one.

Just thought I'd share.

Minelab Service Dept....take your time with my 11" :smoke:

I know what your saying - I put a 6" Excellerator coil on my E-Trac about six months ago - never took it off ...
Light weight - goes deep - no hang ups on brush hogged weeds ( like the open spoke coils ) - it's great for getting in tight spots and it really seems to zoom in on good targets !

Wont you lose alot of depth with those small coils? Is it worth it depth wise?

You won't lose much depth with the 6"x8" S.E.F. coil.
Quarter @ 12" depth; Penny @ 11.5" Depth; Nickel @ 11.5" depth; Dime @ 11" depth (all air tested)

Weight can be helped too, By moving the x-1 probe to the side of the battery compartment!

the 6 inch is deep enough. At least 8 inches
