I'm new to Tesoros and have a Tejon on the way...

Hi Folks,
As the title says, I'm new to Tesoro but they have always appealed to me. I almost bought a Vaquero last year but ended up finding a good deal on an Explorer SX and I have really learned alot using it, but it gets a lil heavy and has a fairly slow recovery time in the trash. Anyways I found this Tejon and couldn't resist! Anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for a Tesoro newb?
Thanks,
Brent

Take your time and read the manual. Learn to ground balance and with practice you'll learn the language of the detector. The Tejon is an awsom detector, congrats!

I second that!!!!!!!!!!!!! Enjoy your Tejon !

Thanks guys! Can't wait till it gets here! I've been going through alot of old threads and picked up several good pointers. I found the "Tips and Tricks with the Tesoro Tejon" PDF file, seems like some real good info there too. Hopefully I'll have some good finds to share soon enough!

Congrats! Hope you find lots of good stuff with it! I have a sneaking suspicion a Tejon will be my next purchase as well.

Thanks! It should be here by Friday. For all who are interested here is the thread with a link to the PDF file mentioned.Sven's Tejon Tips and Tricks thread Thanks to those who compiled and contributed that info, seems great for anyone with a Tejon

Yes take your time. Find every article you can find and keep reading them. Don't get frustrated. Very good machine.

I'm jealous,,,, HH

Hi Brent, I don't believe any of the other guys mentioned it, so I want to be sure and mention to you to be sure and have a good set of phones to use with the TJ. You may already have some gooduns that you have been using with your Explorer, but in case not, be sure to hit some more threads and search out what all them hardcore Tejon fans are using. Some phones are said to hear the TJ talk better than others, so it will help to have some ideas in case you need to upgrade your phones. I would suggest some myself, but .I have been using Koss TD 81's since not long after the TJ came out because they were a big favorite. LOL,wouldn't you know they discontinued them and they are rare to non existant now.I believe you will enjoy the Tejon, though you may have to also upgrade and get more blade on your digger ! You know I have been wanting to try a better pair of headphones. I just have some from radioshack but I've been wanting to try a good pair. I'd actually really like to find some small earbuds that would work because it gets so dang hot here in Louisiana that headphones will make you sweat! There may not be any small ones that will give as good performance as the higher end headphones though. Either way, I'm due up for an upgrade there. Anyone have any suggestions for what will work best with the Tejon?

:hot:
BTW the Tejon just got here as I type! I'm about to open the box right now!

original grey ghost headphones..............
Thanks! I'll start saving my coin again!

I've only played with the Tejon for about 15 minutes in my coin garden and I gotta say, I'm IMPRESSED! WOW this thing is DEEP! I played around with the ground balance and had it set how is recommended pretty quickly. I noticed though that I could operate the machine smoothly with the GB set pretty far in either direction. It seems to hit a little harder being more negative, is this the preferred way to GB? Apparently my soil is extremely low mineralization, as it ran very smoothly all the way to within a half turn of full negative. Any suggestions or recommendations here are appreciated.

Now on to the good part! I have a clad quarter that is around 12+ inches in my coin garden. It has been there about a year and a half. The last time I tried to pick it up with my Explorer, it would give a lower tone and not repeatable signal- generally a no dig. Last night the Tejon hit hard on the Quarter every time, even with the sensitivity turned down a good bit! Now it did DISC out lower than clad, but I assume that is because it was so deep. Anyway, I know this isn't a side by side comparison the same day with the same moisture/halo all that, but still I really didn't think it would match the Explorer in depth! I think I'm gonna love my Tejon!

Hi Backlashd, Good question there about the reccomended GB on the TJ. Most reccomended GB is a hair positive , but I have read of some that do reccomend a hair negative, and with you so soon having the good results with going negative, well, there is another topic for discussion. I have always set mine GB +,but also here awhile back while in my back yard with it over some old coins I have buried, I noticed that my GB was a bit Neg.and the TJ was hitting harder than ever on a couple of the old coins.?? Sort of got me to thinking, Almost everyone reccomends GB +, but the real answer will be to experiment, and use whatever works for you in your dirt. And I would go so far to say that even then it would be wise to do all you can to make repeat checks when hunting to see if it will change back and forth from GB - to GB +.That is what I plan to do and I have been using the TJ for several years now. I know the GB is very critical in order to get the very best depth from it, but that dirt hog goes deep enough that you won't likely notice it or ever suspect it when you happen to get a little + or - in either direction. It is good though to always feel you have that baby tuned to the best of your ability so you won't miss what it is telling you. Yeah, the summers here in S Ms are plenty hot too, but the big eard phones will also keep the skeeters off your ears, so though they are hot, and sweaty, they do have some advantages other than hearing. HH, Charlie

I like my new Jolly Rogers with the cibola

I also ordered a Tesoro. I really wanted a Silverumax but instead I bought a Compadre & a Bounty Hunter Tracker 4 they equaled the same price together as the SilveruMax.
.I got two so I could bring friends but at least I got the Compadre. I figured the tracker 4 was a great choice also for 90 Dollars it has great reviews also.

Go ahead and order a 5.75 HOT coil, put it on the Tejon, and don't take it off.
