I'm New Here Getting A New E-trac in the mail SOON!

I'm a newbie here, but I'm not new to metal detecting. I used to own a Sovereign GT back in 2004 but sold it. Bad move, and yes, it too, was a silver coin killer. I remember noticing a reclining rock at a beach that looked way too comfortable around all the other rocks, so I went over there and my detector went CRAZY! They tell you to always check the hole after you take a coin out in case there may be another one still in there that may be deeper. Yep,there was. 25 quarters later($6.25) I stopped.
Anyway, I ordered and am receiving a new Mine lab E-trac with the 11" coil and it'll be here on Thursday. I also ordered a 4.5x7 Excelerator Search coil for those trashy days, but the woman said it's on backorder and it might be a few weeks before I receive it.
Meantime I have some reading to do with Andy Sabish's book before I go anywhere. Besides I have my first assignment. Carlos, my friend at our church lost his gold wedding band ring tossing a frisbee. That was 6 months ago. I hear gold rings can be elusive. It must be. I've never found one.The directions I've been hearing is, Pull Tab range. DIG and don't be discouraged.
Thanks and I'll keep in touch. I enjoy reading your help and comments you give to others. You sound like a group of fun and wonderful people.

Welcome aboard, you have a great machine on the way! Andy's book is a good source of info and there's lots to be had on this forum as well. Still looking for that first gold ring myself but I have found other gold jewelry.

Congrats on the E-Trac purchase and welcome to the forum. Suggest that you read Andy's book twice. Read it before your machine arrives and then again after you've read the E-Trac owners manual. Tip for when you go to hunt for Carlos ring. Since it was lost only 6 months ago, it will be pretty close to the surface if not on the surface, therefore, run your sensitivity way down (7 - 10) so you do not pick up unwanted buried targets. Looking forward to seeing your finds and the story that goes with them.

Steve's right. Also, when you go over a shallow target you will get 3 or 4 "beeps". So you'll want to listen for that as well. You might ask Carlos how big and thick the ring is. If he has big fingers and the ring was thicker, the higher on the Conductive scale it should hit. Smaller and thinner will go lower on the Co scale. The one I found was a man's ring. It was thinner and for a smaller finger. The reading on it was 11-11 or so, if I remember right.

Glad to have you hear and we're looking forward to hearing the stories and seeing the finds. Take care.

Welcome to the E-Trac forum - lots of great people here to answer your questions - we're all looking forward to seeing photo's of your future finds !

Good luck ! --- Mark

Congratulations on your new E-trac. I have only had mine a few weeks but I really like it. I also had a lot of past experience with Minelab detectors (Explorers and X-terra) and have not found the E-trac to be difficult at all. I just have to remember to slow down since the X-terra 705 was faster. I am sure you will pick up on the E-trac's language quickly and be very successful. Good luck in finding the ring. I am not a jewelry hunter so probably can't help you there. If I dig gold it's because I was dogging a nickel or it was in the coin range. None with the E-trac yet but like I said, I just don't hunt for it so it doesn't surprise me.

Thank you for all the responses! I will give all your suggestions a try and will definitely read Andy's book and the manual 2, 3 times before I attempt to use my new detector. Also, when I find anything, I will post pictures as you've requested.

I look forward to seeing what you find and how you did it.

Thanks again!
Gene

The trick with the E-Trac is to go slow .... and I mean slow, at a crawl, take your time and let the E-Trac scan all of the area.

Welcome to the forum and godd luck with your e-trac. You will love it.
