I'm looking for a cheap scoop.

I live about a 1/2 hour from the beach, but the beach is in Downtown Chicago, I hate going downtown!!!! I want to get a cheap scoop so I can go there maybe 10 or 20 times a year. Like I said, I HATE DOWNTOWN!!!! But I wanna give it a try... But I don't want to invest a hundred dollars for something that I won't use but a few times a year. I would like a long handled one so I could just stand, but if thats too expensive I will settle for a hand scoop. Dry sand and wet sand. I don't care if its not the greatest, If I like going to the beach, then I will buy a good one. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I was looking and I think I found it, can anybody tell me if they like it or not, thanks...

Also I was wondering what is better for a scoop, welded wire screen or drilles metal sheets???

THE PRIVATEER SAND SCOOP (#755)
This sand scoop

If you find jewelry you'll like the beach and wish you spent more on a scoop. Those mesh ones are ok but the aluminum sheet style with holes drilled is much better.

As much as you Hate going down town, I would recommend giving up on this idea. Even if but, a few times a year, you gotta have passion for beach / water hunting.
Keep sod busting and maybe join a MD Club, Learn more about this hobby before the 2 hour traffic jams, parking fees, competition from crack looters and not to mention $$$$ investments, IMHO. But, if you must go, make a hand held scoop from a household container or use your hands and wear gloves.

I want to try my hand at it, maybe I will just make a scoop. But I definitely want to try beach combing.

I have to agree with this one. I've owned both and for dry and wet sand I prefer the screen to the drilled holes. I don't have this exact model, but one similar to it. The screen allows the sand to go through much quicker. The same goes for wet sand. Fill the scoop and let the water wash over the opening and you've recovered your item. Mud doesn't get stuck in the bottom of wire mesh like it does in the other drilled scoop.

I used one for the first 6 months as a surf pirate before shipping in a Bill Babbs Unit that is the cat's meow!

Cheers,
