I'm in pain!

Heh all,

What do people recomend for a very tight, sore, low back! Obviously I'm a newbie to the hobby. I've spent so many hours the last week metal detecting that I can't move, and I absolutely must go tomorow and Sunday! I wish I could be at 10 places at the same time! Any recommendation?

Heating pad and Advil. Then, stretch it out SLOWWWWWWWWWLY prior to the next hunt. Hopefully it loosens up as you start swinging. Whatever you do..DON'T overextend on the next hunt or it gets worse !!

I bwill try the hot soak, massage from wife, and luckily I have a couple of pills left over from a previous doctor visit that will hopefully help too! By the way, I keep hearing the word "Clad"-does that mean relatively new coins?

Yup!!
clad is fust a couple different types of metal sandwiched together.

After about 2 weeks of swinging, and your lower back adjusts, you won't feel a thing. And they say it's really not exercise!?

haha, i remember those days well. a nice hot soaking bath, a couple of aspirin, and a trip or two to the liquor cabinet always fixed me. don't lay around on the couch either, it's the worst thing you can do. it's not my place to tell you what to do todd, but you really need to learn to go a little slower and pace yourself. that piece of ground and whatever is in it will be there tommorow. hope you feel better, and good luck.

I have found one thing that really helps is these.

The nice thing is they go with you. In the cold of winter they really helped me keep hunting, Beale.

Do a few stretches before starting. If you have a bad back, get one of those bungee type detector supports that you wear to help hold the weight of the detector. Be sure to take a break from time to time while detecting. If your like me, the only time you want to put the detector down is when your digging :pulltab:

Good hunting, John K

Thanks for all the feedback. I was too sore to get up early today! I'm going to have to take easy for a
little while I think-probably just 2-3 hours today instead of 8!

You don't need to worry about the pain killers being addictive, you already have the DETECTING addiction. It's amazing what we will endure for the sake of the hobby. Good luck with the short hunt.

Ok guys, I could barely get out of bed today to go to my chiropractor. I guess I really screwed up using a heat pad for about 4 hours and taking a few soaks. The doc said I needed ice, and that heat was the worst thing I could do! I'm going to have to take a few day off and try to get better for next weekend! I actually went out for one hour yesterday cause it was killing me not to go, but I succombed to the pain!-not before I found about $2.oo worth of clad though!

I find the solupus pads work, get them at the Asian store, they are like the Thermacare pads. I saw some folks bending over when they should have bent their knees and squat to the ground.
One thing you can do to strengthen your back is to do sit-ups, also stretch prior to going out. Try sweeping a broom for awhile. But bottom-line, don't over do it. 24 years in the Army, believe you use your back.

Ice vs Heat is always a debate. My wife uses the ice to point she has given herself frost bite, but she swears it helps. The ice just locks me up worse, so I soak in the spa tub, and it loosens me right up (a tall glass of red wine don't hurt either).

Like the others have said, stretch (you can go to the Skelaxin site to get excersises for whatever hurts), shorten the hunts until your body adjust, and show some cool pics of your finds.

Update-missed a day and a half of work cause I couldn't move! Two chiropractor visits later and some meds and I'm feeling better! Hope to go on a great potential hunt Saturday-but I'll keep it to 3-4 hours instead of 8!

Well every time I visit the sports doc for muscle injury, they use ice. I use heat to help stretch and to stay loose.

Todd, I'd strongly suggest you limit yourself to a couple hours a day... before you lose your job, house, car, wife, and the rest!

Obviously your body is trying to tell you it's just not accustomed to the odd new motion required.

I once took a friend's kid out with me... big strapping 22yr old kid 6'2", 260lbs, NOT fat, and a real down in the dirt scrapper...
After an hour or so he was complaining of pain in his forearm that he gave up... LoL
I tried to tell him he was probably just trying too hard! LoL
It was funny.
Oh, he was using my 3lb Tesoro!

Take it EZ getting started... if it's buried there's a good chance it won't fly away!
