Well I got my small coil in the mail this morning and had to try it out immediately! Went right to my Gmas place since the snow is finally gone there and ground is softening up. Right off the bat I was pulling wheats left and right, an old toy truck part, somewhat newer toy trailer, some clad, and then about 10 inches down I found what looks to be a pretty old pocket knife in surprisingly nice condition. The handles are still on it and everything. Gonna try and go back after the kids get home from school and see what else we can dig up. Will get some pics later tonight and post them up from the last couple days on this thread. Cant believe the better separation that his coil gets compared to the stock one! You guys weren't kidding or exaggerating one bit!

Keep yours eye peeled later for the pics and hopefully there will be some silver in there since my oldest wheat was from the 20s so far!

Alright, so I finally got a 5x8 coil for the Pro now and all I can say is WOW.

Many of the places we were hunting gave so many signals that would be jumping from 30 to 80 VDI that I figured it was mostly junk so we had skipped over it for the time being and moved more towards the baseball outfield were it wasn't so trash infested. Now after getting the new coil today we decided to try moving back to infield and back into the playground area to see what we could do with this new little toy.....

Anyhow, I started out at my Grandmothers house for a while today to try it out while the kids were still in school and not 3 feet from her backdoor I pulled a 1926 and 1944 wheatie, which by the way the 26 is my oldest coin to date and were within inches of the house that wrapped in aluminum sheeting around the bottom! With that stock coil it was just going off constantly there anytime we got within 6 inches of the house. Then found a bunch more copper pennies, a couple nickels, some dimes, (all clad), a toy cast trailer, bunch of trash, and this cool old looking pocket knife all out under the old shade tree and this was just from like a 20 by 20 area. Cant say for sure but from the little research I did on the knife shows it may be a

Just looked up the ring and it was made by Jostens. Its made of ARGENTUS. I never heard of it but here is a little info I found about it incase your wondering as well....

Argentus - In the 1970s and 1980s Jostens made some class rings out of Argentus which they described as follows: "Jostens Argentus A new dawn in white precious for your college ring. A unique blend of silver and palladium, (not stainless steel) metals. Argentus is hard and durable and will retain its brightness and beauty for years to come." Wsteinborn (talk)

Great report! Palladiums 780/oz, so thats good! :clapping: Some of the modern class rings are made out of "Lustrium" which is some cheap chrome nickel amalgamation, and not worth boo.

One heck of a post! It is really so neat to find odd and different items you have never seen before. Let us know if you find out what the lead with wire thing is.

Several of us went for years not knowing what the little "bottomless boats" were until a friend of a detecting buddy came up with the answer...sand castle window / door cutters / decorations.

BUT there is nothing like finding and returning something that has much more sentimental meaning to a person. Believe me the scrap value of what you might find will not change your life style, but the karma and self-worth will increase many fold. Keep on swinging...enjoy!

Thanks for sharing your experience with the 5x8 - it's been my 'go to' coil for some time & has paid for itself many times. Very cool that you know the owner of the class ring, I bet she'll be thrilled.

Ben, great find on the class ring and other items. I like finding toy cars. Interesting info on the ring content. I had never heard of that combination. That 5 x 8 is a real joy to swing, isn't it? HH jim tn

Stopped and swung for 20 min in my dads yard on my way to get kids from school. I pulled a 1935 buffalo, a 54 wheat, and a 36 merc which os my first merc! All off the tree lawn by road. Huh wonder were I got that idea there jim lol.

We made it back out for a bit and ended up pulling a bunch more wheat which one was a very nice 1954, (Year my dad was born) so I gave it to him as he was looking for something to use as a ball marker for golf. At the end of the hunt tonight pulled another Merc which was a 45 and in great shape! Also found out the house nextdoor to where I grew up was actually an Old "C" store my dad said. I never knew that. He is gonna ask the neighbors if they mind if we can peek around. Hoping with it being an old store that there will be some goodies hidden in their grass.....

Cool finds...congrats! I've GOT to get me one of those coils soon! Just a matter of convincing my wife it's the proper thing to do at this point in life, lol.
That "thing" in the third pic is a "strand vice". Telephone and power companies use them for the aerial wires/cables. Also used on down guys, the things that go in the ground and keep tension on the poles.
I worked for GTE/Verizon 30 years...used a bunch of them. They are galvanized metal, and the wires were bound/twisted like a winch cable.
