My wife and I are hunting a house time period around 1800 to 1860. We have found some Indian penny oldest 187o 1898 1896 and a 1904 and 05 07 . It's a good Site but one thing we can't figure out is we have found 17 reeds from harmonicas. It's crazy but they are everywhere. Has anyone ever experienced this

n/t

Thanks for chiming in on this I was thinking I was the only one . It's truly amazing on how many is here. And still pulling them out of ground. I'll have pics of them all after we finish. Just a Note this small house is out in the middle of nowhere in a hay field. The owner lived there for 35 years and never knew it existed until one day his atv tire went into a well and hello there is was a foundation. Crazy stuff.

Countless times. (cannot say 17 was the number though).
The outer part called the Comb was first made of wood. That would explain why you only find the reeds and reed plates (although some reed plates where wood also).

I hunted an old fairgrounds many years ago that had them everywhere too:rolleyes:

Not sure what the deal was as I've not ever run into a "swarm" of them like that anywhere else.

Maybe friends and relatives sat around playing the Harmonicas and other instruments as entertainment.and either dropped and lost or discarded non working..........
.another thought might be a bunch of kids lived there and all had Harmonicas that were broken or just lost..........
My Grandpa Played the harmonica and he always had three or Four at any given time...
Nice on the Indian Head pennies recoveries.. maybe there are more...........??

i've heard they were very popular in the old days. i've found my share but not that many at one site. i think they are cool clean them up and put them in a display

Harmonicas don't stay in tune very long. Maybe good for about 3 years if you use it often.

I even found that small little tuning pin that's on the end of them. I will get pics a soon as possible. Thanks for everyone's comments.
