I'm headed to Cancun for a much needed vacation this month, anyone hunted down there?

I'll be staying with friends at their villa in Playa del Carmen and hope to score up a little loot from the beaches of Cancun as well. Anyone have advice regarding restrictions, getting your gear in and out of Mexico and possible hot spots to hit while I take my twelve days of peace and quiet?

Thanks to Any and All,

Never been to Cancun, but Acapulco was nice. Didn't get to go detecting.
It would have had a much better time if all the locals didnt swarm you every second.

I would loveto see pics of the trip and area. Cancun is on my hit list for the future.

I am Rafael from Mexico.I have been detecting in Acapulco for almost 15 years, whotout problems. You will not have any in Cancun, but a lot of trasure, yes.
Happy trip

Gracias Rafael, I didn't expect problems in Mexico as I have always enjoyed the people in your country. I am a little concerned about getting my gear through security as carry on luggage (I don't want to ship it in my luggage in case it gets damaged) especially since I will be on an international flight passing through Miami.
The Americains are still a little jittery since the whole 911 tragedy. I can just imagined being asked if my Excal battery pack is an explosive device or my detector being a weapon to hijack the plane. The security people are generally underpaid and can't be expected to know much about metal detecting after all.

Adios,

Yes Bdahunter.I tried to send my infinium control box for service to Texas and It did not cross the border. It is my dream to go in some time to Playa del Carmen whit my excalibur, goldscan 5B and terra 70.
God bless you all
Rafael

just got back from there,,,,had no problem with getting tector in or out,,just packed it in my checked luggage, carfully,,,,,sand was really soft ,,,i know of 3 rings that were lost in front of our hotel and i couldn't have bought a signal,,,beside the ever present corona caps,,,,found lots of pesos in the drysand, but not a good signal in the water we stayed at the RIU palace los americas,,,the sand was very soft and i believe every thing just sank below were my beachhunter id could get a signal,,,also it seemed to false alot,,not sure why,,still on a learning curve on the machine,,,,but like they say a bad day on the beach is still a very good day------ed

How deep in the water were you hunting Ed? I like to hunt neck deep so I can find a harder bottom that won't let the targets sink below my detector's range. We've been sanded in pretty bad here lately so I know what you mean about not being able to buy a signal. I think I will take the chance with checked luggage but I will have to get some bubble wrap so the gorillas who handle the luggage at the airport will have a challenge damaging my beloved Excal. I am taking my scuba certification while in Mexico so I may be able to get a little deeper than usual while I am down there.
I hope you had a really good time and appreciate the info from your trip.

Cheers,

i had a short hand scoop so i was kinda limited on the depth i could tect in,,the beach i hunted had no one ever on it,,hard to believe but i had a virgin beach and still couldnt find gold,,,,the sand is kinda different there, its not like the sand like at vabch or anywhere ive ever hunted,,,it was broken down limestone, kinda offwhite in coarse but soft at the same time,,,i found peso coins at almost a foot deep all corroded so they had been there a long time,,,but the peso coins are made out of a lighter metal than ours,,,so they didn't sink as far as the rings and things,,,,all in all we had a terrific time,,the water is clear pretty as can be,,,,we stayed at the RIU PALACE LOS AMERICAS,,,,and the people at the desk said i was the only guest to tect the beach ever,,,,so i know its a gold mine i just couldn't find the entrance to the mine,,,,i hope you find the entrance BDAHUNTER,,,,good luck ed-BOTD

Thanks Ed, I can always use a little luck. I am really keen about getting my diver certification so I can try to find the entrance to that gold mine.

Cheers,
