I'm done with 13-38 Zincons!!

So this evening I decided to sort the some 700 coins that I have dug in the last 2 months. Man I am so disappointed in our zinc pennies! I mean a 2007 dissolving? What? It almost seems wrong. We can still find coins that are hundreds and thousands of years old...the zincs I have found won't make it fifty. Why not just make them out of cardboard? I had to throw almost 2/3 of my pennies away. The zincs that I could keep are now put away in a jar out of sight. I guess someday I'll cash them in. I must say that my copper penny jar looks much more pleasing to the eye. Makes me a bit nostalgic to see them all together.

So if I do decide to pass on the 13-38 zinc range will I be making a mistake? Of course I won't be passing on 12-13-42-44 as they have the potential to be coppers or wheats. I guess I'll need to pay close attention to the 11-34-37 Indian Head range. Anyway, I am sick of crappy zincs. The parks and schools here in WA are FILLED with zincons! I'd much rather spend my time hunting for higher denominations. Do you all sometimes pass on zincs?

I did hear one guy say that he pulled a good ring in the penny range? Not the zinc range I hope.

So tomorrow my wife and I are taking a four hour drive to the Pacific Ocean and will be staying for three nights! Any good advice for beach hunting? I ordered a Kellyco sand scoop however it is not going to show up on time so I had to improvise with a plastic thrift store pitcher that I paid $0.99 for. I hope it holds up.

Those things... ugh, I'm with ya can't standem... they're so close to indians though, I usually diggem. Especially if I plan on visiting that site again so I know its out of the ground if nothing else...

Have fun on the beach! HH

What a embarrassment those zincons are to the coins of the past, a friend and MDer and I at work refer to them as token ( but that also down grades tokens). I would rather see them made of something else than zinc, and also the quality of the detail and cartoon art work on most our small coins. If I were Jefferson and Lincoln I'd beat some engravers for doing that to me.

you skip zincs and yes you will miss a lot of shallow indians, some wheats, and even possibly LARGE gold rings.

I agree that they do stink, and that they are very embarassing. But do not miss out on other targets in that range. You are right, I have read posts as well and watched videos of guys who have dug rings and such in that range. Unless I'm around a local park or something I do not dig much clad. I stay in woods, feilds, and old abandoned foundations.

LARGE gold rings can respond at the zincoln range. So can many old tokens along with some indians.

I dig lots of wheats that come in at 12-38 (can't remember if I've had any that were 13-38 but they're usually bouncers and I only dig them if they're deep).

While at the old park ran into another Dayton Digger and he just dug a 12-38 Indian Head a very nice 1900! So pass that signal at your peril.

So I guess I will digging zinc signals after all. From what I am hearing you all say is....it's about the depth? Shallow zincs no but then again it could be a big fat gold ring. We live in a cruel, cruel world.

I see mine coming in all over the map. I hate them too but since they don't settle in at a given number I have to dig them.

Look at it this way Skyblast. At least your clearing them out and also if they dissolve that fast - they kinda clear themselves out. I just wish we'd go back to making silver coins. Instead of dimes, quarters and halves, they could be dollars, fives and tens. There are times I skip the ones that hit 2 inches and less.

I don't know I kind of think silver coins are mystical. Like leprechauns and Michael Jackson. At least around here they seem that way

This is my Conspiracy theory and I'm stickin to it. The US treasury gains every time a zinc cent gets lost. They loose when we find one and put it back into circulation. So they have developed a plan to have to make the junkiest cheap piece of something that we all pay a penny for and then they slowly dissolve away and we have to buy more of them to keep a supply. They hate it when we dig up millions of lost coins and put them back into collection or circulation. Its just like a car manufacturer who makes his bolts shaped so that only they have the tool to use the bolt. They have made the incredible shrinking coinage that eventually disappears and then you have to buy more to replace it. And then they figured out a way to make them dissolve so that they don't affect the supply in the future. If they have there way they will do away with coins altogether so that we only use a card to plus or minus the numbers they crunch.

By the way. Even the smallest piece of junk zink penny can be turned into the federal reserve for a new one.

But like I said, I'm stickin to my theory.

good luck,

I HATE Zincolns too! If we wait long enough, they will be all gone though
I usually get Zincolns at 13-37 with the Ferrous number varying according to the amount of deterioration, Memorials at 12-38. Wheats are 12-42 to 12-44. Of course, all numbers can vary according to conditions.

I'm finding that the more the zincolns rot, the easier it is to tell that it is a rotting zincoln rather than a low reading wheatie, a high reading IH or possibly a brass token or gold ring. To my E-trac, using multi-tones, it is a pretty obvious sound. Plus, the target ID bounces around on a rotting, corroding target.

your better off with the plastic scoop. i bought the metal 1 and had too hold it behind me or drop my sensitivity way way down. good luck send pics

So if i dont want to dig the zincs I will not dig the shallow ones, but always the deeper zinc signals as this is where the IH and the older wheats are in the teens. At this time I just dig them all as some of the IH are not that deep and can fool you in some places.

So here I am with my wife and our chihuahua at the ocean. Chillin at the hotel. After an hour, four pennies....two zincs ha and one quarter. Man the beach is not what I expected. The etrac is so quiet. I guess ill put it into beach mode tomorrow. I'm trying to seek out common area.... areas. So far beach hunting is not what I expected. Lots of swinging, little action.

My homemade plastic pitcher scoop? Ehhh. It's ok. Needs more holes. Kinda sad that although I'm at the ocean I was eying the high school on the way in.

WAIT HOLD ON PLEASE YOU WANT TO KNOW THIS AN AMERICAN 10 DOLLAR GOLD COIN COMES UP AS 12.38 IF IT IS TRASHY IT COMES UP 13.38 PLEASE DON'T COUNT THOSE NUMBERS OUT
