I'm Discouraged on Minelab Sovereign Coils

FLIPTOP1942

New member
I love sovereign metal detectors but i am discouraged on buying anymore because of the coils i have own several of sovereign and love them but having to replace coils is very costly You would think that when minelab found out about this problem they would honor fixing the problem for the people that buy their detectors because of there mistake like cars have recalls here is a photo of 5 coils that i can't find anyone to repair them money wasted..

I have seen others with this problem and wonder why, those I know of and since 1996 I try all the different model of the Sovereign have never had any that does this. I have other people around too and never seen one do this from all the friends that use the Sovereigns. I can see a bad batch of coils cables, but those in the picture are the older coils and some of the newer ones too. Is it weather or salt water causing this or the coils laying in the sun as we know these black cables can get hot and maybe this is what is doing it, but sure would like to know myself why some have no problem and others have this problem, so I hope we can get a good response from others so we can see why this is happening. Anyone try a aftermarket coil like a Sun Ray to see if they do it too??

Rick

Sent you a PM.

If your a land hunter repair them, very easy if you can solder and handy at fixing.

I never had a problem with any of the Sov coils....... the Xcals yes, but they get used in the salt water and put away for years and they had a period of BAD coil cables. I ask the same question.......are this being used in salt water? You could soldier new cable on and use shrink tube with a touch of aqua seal for land use.

Are you using them in a salt water enviroment? If so do wash the coils off real good? I wash mine off every time I use them in my shower using hot water which removes any salt residue better than cold water. You can also treat the cablew with a silicne spry to help protect them from UV rays.

Try using McNett Silicone Spray every 2-4 hunts to help protect the cables. Here is one link to it...

Yeah, I do the hot shower thing with mine as well. I think it helps. I've had zero cable issues on any of the Excal's I've had. But I agree, for land hunting, I'd try to fix them.

i appreciate your answers and thank you.

If you are a dirt hunter you are the KING of coil destruction. Ive never known anyone with 5 bad coils from one machine. Are these purchases and you are trying to find someone to repair them?

The best coil that minelab ever made was the horse shoe coil, my uncle has one on his excel and it goes deep and he has never had ay prob. with it, It was with the first excels they put out, it is many years old, Grubstake

Hey Rick

I had two minelab blue sticker GT slimline tornado coils fail within a week of each other. Both were hunted in Salt Water but were rinsed and stored in dark dry places. The only sun exposure was hunting time.

On a side note. I did contact Minelab and was granted a replacement for both coils. I feel very fortunate as I know a few people have tried. I want to add I was very forward as to use and care taken with failure. I also provided serial numbers. I am also a long time Minelab user with three different machines currently.

I also want to note that the one coil was my go to coil as I felt it preformed the best in Salt Water this coil failed first even tough it had 1000's more hrs than the other. However when I went to grab my spare it too was cracked. However I had inspected this coil 1 1/2 month earlier and had no issues.

Some guy on Ebay from Vegas use to sell a lot of Minelab salvage parts.I doubt if he had anything to do with Minelab or permission(dumpster diving) to sell these parts. Not sure why anyone would collect these. HH Ron

These coil are from different sovereign that i have bought over the years.

First time posting in the sov/excal section here and unfortunately it's related to this. I had just bought a coil listed as new, used it once and when I went to use it again the cable was falling apart! I know that the tornado's are regarded as nice performing coil but that left a bad taste in my mouth. I've gotten a hold of the seller to see about a refund and ordered a sunray s8 from another dealer. Thanks, just had to get that off my chest!

I would be interested in any coils that would be compatible and recommended for the excal as I am putting one together with scrap parts. I will be only beach huntiing, no scuba. I can usually fix anything or at least learn from trying so if you have something you'd let go cheap let me know. I am in southern CA.
