I'm Back...

After trying to love a Minelab Explorer SEPro and then an E-Trac, it was just too much. I've ordered a Sov GT. I got my first Sov back in 1994, and have had 4 of them. Why do I keep trying something else, when i know that the Sov will do everything that I want it to do, simply and quickly. Hopefully it will come next week. Now the only thing I need is a meter to go with it. Hearing is not what it used to be, so the meter is a necessary evil.
I am back in the fold.

welcom back bro . I feel the same way I have no disire for and E track or explorer, not that they are badd machines I just feel so much more comfortable with the soveriegn and i think 17 frequencys is enuff the only other machine I am intrested in is a Infinium for the water and really badd ground but then again the GT can handle some really badd ground

All that I will say is the GT (TO ME) is simple, easy and to use. Basically a powerful turn it on and go machine. ( I use a meter as well due to hearing loss and helps me tremendously) The rest is up to you and your ears: to dig or not to dig. Welcome back to the forum and look forward to your future posts. - Jim aka dimeman and aka EPL

I have an E-Trac right now but I would be lying if I said that I never catch myself wishing that I still had my GT. I miss it. :sadwalk:

I evolved up the line of detectors until I finally (after much consideration) broke down and bought a Sovereign GT
and this detector is everything I was told it was and more.
I think this is as high as I need to go and have no plans to "upgrade".
I have never found so many coins next to iron until I started using this detector and it makes old sites like new again too!!
I know now why so many stated that they will not part with their Sovereigns.

Yeah, this is Sov # 5 for me. I'm just a slow learner. I keep thinking that there's always soemthing better coming down the pike: if it is, it will be a newer Sov!!!

I have a E-Trac too and it really does a good job, but as I have said before I don't get out much like I would like too because of health issues, but when I do I seem to grab my GT as it works so great for me and don't have to dig so much trash.
Now the question you E Mailed me about the meter reading of a 180 meter. I don't have the web page where I had this info as it was Ken Wildherre site and maybe someone else has this info and could post it for you.
Meters seem to be hard to find as I need one too and am using a multi meter right now, but looking for a good Sun Ray or even a digital Minelab 550 or 180 as I have the kits to make a 550 into a 180.
I also find I need good headphone too because of my hearing being so bad, but found a set made by Detector Pro called the Bushmasters for one of its dealers that has excellent volume for those that need the volume on a Sovereign. Also a set of the original Timberwolfs also work great.
Good Luck and hope to see some great finds posted by you and your GT as I know you have the detector to do it and you should have the experience to being it is your 5Th one.

I agree that my GT is the end product of my search for the best detector and unless they actually do ever come out with one that can ID gold [don't believe they will anytime soon] then this GT is all I will need unless prospecting or underwater. I still have faith that once I learn the tones the Sov will give me an edge in recovering the gold targets and to those who say dig it all I say you are probably correct, but if true we don't really need a Sov, just any good detector that will go deep in bad ground and disc iron. For prospecting I have an MXT and sometimes use it for coins/jewelry because it's handier than the GT but then I wind up thinking I should have brought the GT for its iron handling ability. In many places the GT could probably do better than the MXT for prospecting larger nuggets. For underwater I need the Excal or maybe a Surfmaster PI. Maybe then I could have all the bases covered. That's my current thinking anyway. I love to hear your thoughts about all this. Good luck. James

Most Sovereign users end up buying back another Sovereign and accessories.Glad to see you back.Yelp I've been there a couple of times.I have used the 550 and 180 the 550 is better for some hard to get rid of screw caps, but the 180 works very well and is stable.I've converted a few 550s to the 180 meter and find it to be a very easy process, the hardest part peeling the Minelab face sticker off intact.I use a converted ohm meter and have built a few.A new GT would lose its warranty if a power plug was installed.I have installed power plugs on extension coil cable but is too expensive. At this point keep looking for a used Minelab or Sunray meter.By the way I saw a S-1 probe on Ebay at a decent price.Welcome back and Good Luck

Welcome back !!.....I too still have that specail place in my heart for the Sovereign .....I still have an XS , but also use my E Trac a lot ......For the light weight duties , i'm using an AT Pro and having a ball with that too ...... There's nothing like that sexy tone of a Soveriegn though !!......Gotta love it !!.....Jim
