I'm at 440. 525 next?

What should I expect if I try 525? I'm guessing that the machine will "sound off" on targets that are more "iffy". If that's the case, it would follow that the C$ will also be sounding off more often.
Would it be more advisable to keep the thresh and sens as they are now, and just un-notch nickel? Will that allow tabs to snealk into the picture?
What's my next step? I'm not saying that I'm READY yet, I just like to mull things over.
Thanks in advance,
Tagamet

also, if you have nickels notched out, you won't dig any. Yes, if you notch in nickels, you will dig some pulltabs, thats a fact, but Like Tony in NC will tell you, if you aint willin to dig some junk, you won't consistantly find good targets either. If you have run 440 long enough to get comfortable with it, then drop down to 525 and see what happens. The lower the threshold and high the sensitivity the less stable the unit will become in some soils so depending on where you want to hunt, you may have to play with the two a little in order to stabalize the Coinstrike to hunt in that area.

You will also experience more feedback from targets depending on what you have notched in. It really comes down to what your comfortable with. I'm at the point of running 8 sensitivity with a threshold of 10 most of the time and depending on where I hunt.

It may not even be noticeable since you've had a good start, so give it a try........
As far as the notching, that's totally your call. You say it's a 10 year old field & that means there's lots a tabs in there. Only 10 years old will mean there's no buffalo nickels to miss, so maybe continue the way your going?......
Some people like to notch alot out like nickels& just go "Quartering".......there are lots of fun possibilities with the C$. I only notch zinc myself as I hate those rotted things :ranting:

Tagamet,

I came up with 440 when I was hunting a prohibition era dance hall that had been torn down. I swear the cook threw all the old tin cans and jar lids out the back door and covered em up with a layer of dirt! Using the 440 let me "see thru" the trash and get a fairly solid lock on a Merc dime at 6-7" down in all that junk. I had to go by the tone and meter to pinpoint the dime as there were so many signals within a couple inches of the dime that it was impossible to use the Pinpoint mode. This was within a couple weeks of the release of the C$ and that one instance was only the first of many the C$ pulled off.

but we were speaking in terms of hunting for clad at a newer site that wouldn't have indians.......
I should have clarified that I rarely notch......but only do at like a beach or newer site looking for clad. HH< Bill

I know what "unstable" means in people, but what does it mean when referring to the C$? Even though I stayed with the identical, 440 settings, when I tried two different sites, I ran into VERY different preformance. One site I finally figured out that there were "hot rocks" all over the place that set the machine off where there were no targets. The next site had "soil" that looked a lot like a mixture of small rocks and cinders. Some of the larger cinders were enough to set off my vibraprobe. The problem with this site was that all of a sudden I was back to digging NAILS (Argh). Blocking iron was one of the best features I loved about the C$. Can I guess that the cinders added to the conductivity enough for the nails to register? I'm confused. To top it off, I only found 8 pennies at the cinder site. There should have been at LEAST one quarter there, as I've found them with the Garrett and the Tejon at that park.

Tagamet,

I had the same problem with cinders at some sites. Even with the sens at 2-3 and the theshold lowered to the -50 to -60 range they were still a problem. Turnng the tracking on seemed to help a bit but still the C$ is very noisy with high tone falses on some kinds of cinders and hot rocks. Fisher really needs to come out with a DD coil or make some software changes to help in areas like that IMO.

Will the new ID Edge handle these situations (hot rocks, cinders, and high falses) any better than the C$? If my track record remains in tact, it'll deal with all of them, since I now have a C$ (lol).

Tagamet,

Based on all our experiences with the Excel and if the Edge follows suit, then it should not have those issues. I think Fisher has really listened on the Edge and given us (based on our wants/gripes about the last 2 offerings) a detector that should have been the first of the new digital models not the 3rd in the lineup. But Hey, at least Fisher is listening and improving!

Stick with the C$ for now and learn it. If things get to narly at least you can prescirbe yourself some Vitamin H.

I hear that the Whites DFX is getting mods with a USB port on the side for program changes and software upgrades, this is not pos just hearsay. Now if Fisher would release a C$ with a USB port and upgrades you could put in with a 10in coil like they have and be able to shut off the outside and use the inside would save from coil changes and have the best of both worlds with a 10in and 3x5 coil all in one.Everything can be done and this could too Who knows maybe Fisher is working one something right now.

(Not to be too heretical, but,) I understand that Tesoro is field testing a new unit too. It'll be interesting to see how their features match up. The new Fisher isn't even listed at the Fisher web site. Any idea when info will officially be released? It'd be a wonderful feature to "cap" those high hot rock/cans readings. The hot rocks really got my goat!
