I checked with my local Police Dept. to check out the laws regarding MD and they told me there are no ordinances regarding MD as long as I don't dig manholes all over the place they won't have a problem with it and there's like 6 parks in town !

Funny thing at least for me when someone gives you a little freedom like they just did I am even a little more carefull not to abuse it. Just respect the hobby and it will reward you. Good luck.

Boris,

You are right about being more respectful and ensuring you are doing the right thing.

There is a "thing" you can buy at your local leather tooling shop. With it you can remove the rod out of an Ice pick and marry it to the "thing". You now have an Ice pick with 7 or 8 inch shaft. When I dig parks or other sensitive areas, I take in nothing but my detector, a shoulder pouch for trash and *this* digging tool. I use a grinder to remove the sharp point, so I don't scratch too many coins. You can use the tool as a probe, then stick the thing in beside the coin, wallowing it back and forth, loosening the soil enough to get you finger in to pry the coin out, leaving no evidence you dug at all. Years ago in my area, some silly-buggers used shovels to dig for coins in local parks and the city park officials are still paranoid :) When they see me digging with an Icepick they just smile and walk away!
