IM -16 against No Disc

What are your opinions on running the EXII with IM set at -16 against running it in the SmartFind screen with IM off and no discrimination at all? Essentialy what I am asking, is if the machine operates and responds the same way to both setups. They are both "wide open" as far as descrimination goes, but one has IM on and the other off. Does having IM on, even though it is at -16, have an affect on how the machine processes the info it is receiving? Hopefully Cody and some of the other technical guys will know if having this IM circuitry processing enabled helps or hinders.
Thanks,
Todd

There is no difference as both are all metal. I use the SmartFind screen because there is more information on the screen. This is another one where it is only a matter of preference.
If we want to decrease the Mask from -16 to -15 it is easy to do in Iron Mask. In SmartFind we would need to edit the screen and black out the area of the screen that is the same as -15. Also in SmartFind we can black out any part of an iorn mask. As an example we can have an area of rejection that is -15 1/2 or only have half of -15 so we knock out the high conductive half and keep the low conductive half of -15. Also, IM setting in Iron Mask ON cannot be stored in an S memory location but they can if duplicated on a SmartFind Screen. In addition we can duplicate several iron mask such as -12 and -15 but then and have all the others cleared. Althought we turn Iron Mask on and see the setting screen this is just another display screen. No matter which display screen we use if it is black it is rejection and if clear then acceptance.
As a side bar the digital display and tones only indicated clear areas. No rejected targets are sounded or displayed.
Hope this helps and answers the question.
Have a great Saturday,
HH, Cody

Cody,
Thanks for the reply. So what you are telling me is that the only function of IM is the descriminaing out of the screen from left to right as it is increased? I knew that this is what IM does as far as what we see, but didn't know if running in IM activates any additional circuitry that would have an affect on performance one way or another. Thanks again for the info.
Todd

Yes, you are correct about Iron mask. There are no circuits that allow us to see through iron as in it is not there. If you used the negative VDI numbers that at 0 to -95 that would be iron mask. There are 16 maskx starting with -16 for all metal and then up to 0 for masking all iron or ferrous metals. It is important to realize iorn mask is based on ferrous content or ferrous/nonferrour or magnetic and nonmagnetic but is called just inductance. The horizontal axis is therefore ferrous content. The left of the screen is where metals with the most ferrous content indicated. The reason we don't just black the left size and forget it is becasue some good targets also hit on the left side depending minerals. Also, for rleic hunting we need to see the entire screen at times.

I have an illustration attached.
I use the DFX and spent a lot of time understadning how it operates so can help you make the transition. The DFX process was sold to Whites by Minelab so you are looking at brothers when it comes to the detectors. There are some major differences as you know but I use and like both detectors. They are both great detectors.
