not as much as this year. Lately I noticed that in chest deep water I get a lot of falsing. It can be very frustrating to check a signal that isn't there. The excal is set at 2 for discrim, 11 o'clock for sensitivity and halfway for volume and has a good threshold sound. The falsing sounds go up or down in tone, sometimes many times sounding like a flute. Is this normal or is my machine messed up. I do find coins and my last trip to florida I found one silver and one gold ring. But the constant changes in tone level is driving me nuts.

If you have a coil cover, peel it off and see if it is full of dirt and water.
If you have sealed it with silicone, it may have developed a leak, trapping air, water and dirt inside.
This would be the easiest thing to check first.

for some reasom I cannot turn the sensativity past 12 o'clock either...I get falsing unless I run in auto or keep it at 12. So I can't run it to its full potential....How deep am I getting....not sure...I feel like I am losing out on depth but time will tell...it is new to me so far...I have been digging at least a foot on new quarters and others....they were all green so It must be doing good ..

I thought that was the problem. I also tried setting my sensitivity lower and higher with no different results.

One problem ruled out.........
Now by adusting higher and lower without any effect, just how much lower? Are we talking about wacky operation at ANY setting, including auto???
You might try wiggling the cable around to see if a broken wire in the coil cable is the problem.
Also, try to see if there is any moisture evident in the "box".
Do these problems happen with the coil in the air as well or just underwater? How about on the beach and on dirt?
You say that it's noisy in all metal also. Are you hunting anywhere near sources of electrical noise?
I'm afraid that you will have to send it in to Vegas.
Give them a call with a full description of all information that you can determine.
It would be nice if you could find someone else with a Sov/Excal to compare with. While you can't just swap coils, you could maybe see if there is something about the area that is the problem.
Anyway, good luck.
It's always better to convince Minelab that there really is a problem other than the operator.

I had a bit of falsing once when I should have been ok cause I was in auto...I heard once on forum if your coil wire is wraped loosely around lower shaft that it might give falsing...so I rewraped coil wire a bit better and it fixed the problem...Try it! Maybe someone out there can let us know exactly how to properly wrap the mile long cable so it doesn't malfuntion!!...Why are they so long anyways...??? <img src="/metal/html/confused.gif" border=0 width=15 height=22 alt=":?">

If a target is very deep, you will hear a tone change which may not be repeatable and you will only be able to pinpoint it in pinpoint mode. Sometimes, the tone will be variable , rather than a single tone, if an item is not being accurately id'd so it's sort of bouncing between conductivity readings. This can be a very deep target or one that's on edge.
You can get falsing as the coil sweeps away from an elongated iron target. Your pinpointing in disc will be off to one side, so it will seem like there's nothing in the hole.
If you're running sensitivity on the high side, you may be getting falsing as waves lift you (and the coil)slightly above the ocean bottom.
Finally, if there is alot of black sand, you may just need to cut-back your sensitivity a bit.
If none of these applies, you might have a look and see if the rubber seal on the battery connector is letting a small amount of water in and is thus shorting-out the battery contacts.
Hope this helps you out.

once mine goes under the water i must cut the sensitivity back to around 1pm

not many people i know use any dicrm. .............0

It sounds like my coil when it got black sand in between the coil and the coil cover.Try taking the coil cover off first see if there is anything under the coil cover.
I had that happen to me and I thought my metal detector went out. But after taking the coil cover off it was fine.
