Between these which what you choose for all around use? Tesoro Sidewinder, Compadre, or Fisher 1236 X-2? And why? Or would it be a different one all together?

1236 of the ones you listed...

Do you think the Vaq. is better than the Sidewinder? Why? The only thing it has that the Sidewinder doesn't is a manual GB. Or is there more?

Between the three the 1236X-2 hands down.Better depth, hits hard on silver, coil sweep speed isn't critical. The two Tesoros you chose isn't in the same performance category.

I'D have to go with the 1236X2 if you check with users they have very little complaints about it,unfortunately its no longer made. by Fisher.

Teknetics Omega 8000 for me

Either my White's M6 or my Troy X-2 . The SE isn't fun anymore and I'm not buying anymore expensive " top of the line detectors" unless they're at a garage sale cheap .

Why do you limit yourself to these detectors, save some more money and buy Tesoro Cibola or even Vaquero.

n/t

it would have to be a fisher cz detector for me. the other detectors are good ones but the cz's will smoke them all.

from what you listed, for my types of detecting tasks, it would be none-of-the-three.

There's definite differences in performance between the two Tesoro models and the Fisher you listed. Of the three, for some of my hunting, I'd opt for the Fisher. In a few isolated applications I might grab the Compadre. There are drawbacks to all of these, and the only one in current production is the Compadre as a low-end model from a manufacturer who hasn't brought us anything new and creative for a while.

For sure it would be different. I note that, along with not mentioning the type of application you have for these, you also didn't list a model that featured any visual Target ID or other information. Have you used a TID model before? Is there a reason why you didn't include one in your choice?

I'll qualify by saying that I do not always refer to the visual display, and certainly not to make a Dig/No-Dig call when I am hunting old sites like pioneer encampments or ghost towns or dated recreation sites based upon the visual display info. However, it can be very beneficial at times.

Also, I like to have more operator control of a detector and that definitely includes manual and/or automated Ground Balance. That will enhance the performance over a wide variety of ground conditions and can let the operator 'tune' the detector for best performance when changing search coils, too. Your choices lack that capability.

I don't care for models that are heavy and cumbersome and awkward as they can be quite fatiguing for longer use. I don't like models with a delayed response or slow recovery, so you listed some that would qualify as OK in that department.

Two you listed have long since been discontinued, and the cheapest has been a round a long time unchanged. There are a few current production models from a couple of manufacturers that I am most familiar with and tend to prefer so I'll list them here.:

From White's I like the MXT as well as the M6. They both feature automated Ground Balance and you can 'Lock' or turn-off the Tracking feature, which I prefer. They are both quick-response/fast-recovery models and can provide you with very good coin hunting performance. While both can function for "relic hunting" the MXT is the better of the two and it is also the better models for all-purpose hunting.

From Teknetics the T2 is a good detector with a lot of power, but I find it better suited for "relic hunting" and even "gold nugget hunting" more than as a day-to-day typical "coin hunting" unit. I like my T2, but I get far better performance for a daily-use detector from my Omega and the Gamma. Dollar-for-Dollar, they are very tough to beat in the way of performance and versatility as well as being very light and providing a lot of visual display information that is functional.

If I could have only one detector and one or two spare coils, I would take a Teknetics Omega or Gamma with stock coil and 5" DD coil for sure, and maybe add the 11" DD coil for more open-area coverage. Metal detecting is what I do, and I've been at it since I started in the Spring of '65. I've got a pretty good feel for what works and what doesn't, and without any suggestion from you as what it would be for, I'll have to say the Omega and Gamma would be two you need to consider.

The big thing here is what are you looking for as you would use a 30-06 to hunt rabbit as a shotgun would suffice..Basically the Fisher is a heavier deeper silver unit and the Tesoros are a lighter unit that like gold jewelry. Having said the above go to a local dealer or bring up the subject at a club meeting as a member or prospective member and see what works best in your area.
Lots of medium priced units from various manufacturers and would not limit yourself to the aforementioned units..

Thanks for the replies guys. I mostly hunt for coins and jewelry but would like to get down to the river and do some searching for gold and to the Oregon coast to do some beach detecting. Monte. I have used detectors with TID but i spent more time looking at the screen and trying to figure out if i should dig or not. I am pretty new to this, so i don't have much experience with either type. Mainly i just wanted to know what others thought was the best all around detector.

I can be flexible in my driving (and detecting :) ) and would be glad to meet up with you, if possible. Shoot me an e-mail to monte@ahrps.net

There is no need to constantly view the display, especially with models that also feature even limited audio Tone ID. Oh, I glance at it, but that is done at the same time I am making a re-sweep or two over the target so there's no loss of time. I mostly coin and jewlery hunt, in town, but prefer to research and then venture off to out-of-the-way sites to hunt. Yes, I am still looking for old coins, as well as trade tokens and old jewelry, but also enjoy all the interesting "neat stuff" that has been left behind.

I still feel that I just couldn't let go of my Compadre - Its such a fun little detector - light weight, simplistic, top notch warranty, finds the goods - and the little thing still brings on a smile..... impressed with such an affordable machine. For what it is, its more fun than frustration.
