"Iffy" signals AT Max

Hello all! So I'm still kinda new to detecting. But would like to know what people call iffy signals? What do you consider an iffy signal? My yard has a lot of nails, trash and the dig it all method is wearing on me! Should I dig only solid tones or??? Thanks for the info in advance..!

When in doubt...dig!

Iffy signals are those, which bounce around on the screen, but the bouncing around also includes good tones and numbers such as high tones, and numbers in the 70's and 80's. This can happen where say a coin is beside, under or on top of a nail. It can also happen on large targets like rusted iron and canslaw.

So....those who dig those iffy signals tend to get more good finds. However, it can get frustrating and sometimes, cherry picking is an alternative for peace of mind! And.....digging those iffy signals is also an excellent way to learn your machine.

Good luck and I hope you get some great finds this year.

I totally hear what your saying. I end up digging a lot too but am slowly starting to figure out some to pass over now by the sounds. I’m trying to watch videos that also have the sounds to help decipher. I now pass ones that give a small tone if not solid and numbers above 40. I still always have that nagging fear that I’m missing something awesome though and sometimes will go back and dig anyhow....always to find a nail or washer etc.

The location you are hunting will affect the way you look at iffy signals.

In older locations the good finds are deeper then in new areas. Some areas are just filled with junk. There you might consider discriminating out Iron.

The deeper the target the less reliable the target ID number or it jumps around from low to High, but a high tone should raise your interest to investigate further even if the ID number is not perfect. I am describing targets deeper than 6".

Also the worse the dirt is mineralized the depth and clear readings will suffer.

Also at times as I move around and the signals are not stable I try to ground balance again and get clearer signals. If the ground balance is off you can be picking up mineral in the ground.

Many parks in my area were filled in years ago when they dug up the freeways. In those days there was a real problem getting rid of the extra dirt. No one wanted it. You can wonder into an area where the soil changes.

Good Luck

I had one of those. "Iffy signals just last friday at a park that I haven't detected in about twenty eight years.
Alot had changed in the place....not so good...fill dirt...even found some yukky hot rocks...or terra cota..
Anyway it did give out alot of Barber dimes and even a Barber half a long time ago..along with shield nickels, "V" nickels, two gold rings, lots of indians.....so what the heck...worth a try right?
I find a signal with some good tones BUT it was jumpy....between 60 to 67 ish (with my at pro...not a max...even still )...
So what caught my ear was the tone of the signal....it just didn't sound like 100% trash......so I got to digging....
Three inches down...... A PUll Tab !!! Huh??......check the hole again ....a steady...65. Repeating and at different angles....hmmmmm
Pin pointer....strong in the middle....BAM!!! A nice shape 1904 Indian head penny!!!!! At about a total of five inches deep... Directly UNDERNEATH that
Three inch deep pull tab......!!!! Probably the only reason that indian head survived being found by
Years of detectorists other than me.

So just some thoughts about those "iffy" signals
Yes , digging seemingly endless amounts of can slaw and chunks of foil and tounges of pull tabs etc...gets NERVE racking ..BUT....
Sometimes it pays to really listen to what your target is...and what your AT is trying to tell you..
There was a jumpy 60 to 67.....
HH!
