...remember, take plenty of water with you. most of us this time of year get out early and keep the hunts short. a jug of gatorade every other day helps keep muscle cramps at bay too. no relic or coin in the ground is worth your life! you can extend your hunts if you slow down a little bit too. a shot of off! and tick repellent is helpful too. if there was ever a good time to slow down and pace yourself, that time is now on thru sept. so, take it easy, leave early, and drink plenty of water- i sure don't want to hear about anyone getting hurt or falling out. take care of yourselves, and hh!

How about detecting IN plenty of water? No heat, no ticks and no mosquitoes?? Just an alternative!!!

I get some stuff from a friend of mine who is a gunsmith call DURANON. It is a tick repellant. You spray your clothes with it the night before and I never get ticks on me. You CAN Not spray it on your skin. Have to use something else for that. Also spray your boots and cap if you wear one.

Here in VERY southern Arizona we don't have to worry much about most of the things folks have mentioned here. Poison Ivy won't grow, almost no mosquitos, few ticks, etc. Even the rattlesnakes hunt a hole after the first hour of sunlight, but I don't detect at night for the same reason. The worst things we have to contend with are the occasional scorpion, "jumping Cholla" or wild burro. Those little cusses will walk right up and give you one heck of a bite or kick.

Other than dehydration we are most concerned with breaking a leg on rocky hillsides, and heat exhaustion. We ALWAYS carry extra water no matter where we're going. If your car breaks down several miles off the freeway water is the first concern. Right now the temperatures are hovering around 110 degrees and rising. We usually see a few days over 120 in mid July. Sunburn is a huge problem.

I try to get out around daylight and return by noon or so. The occasional rattler in the early morning is better than the heat in the afternoon.
