...remember, take plenty of water with you. most of us this time of year get out early and keep the hunts short. a jug of gatorade every other day helps keep muscle cramps at bay too. no relic or coin in the ground is worth your life! you can extend your hunts if you slow down a little bit too. a shot of off! and tick repellent is helpful too. if there was ever a good time to slow down and pace yourself, that time is now on thru sept. so, take it easy, leave early, and drink plenty of water- i sure don't want to hear about anyone getting hurt or falling out. take care of yourselves, and hh!

Great advice...In this weather and humidity, the fleas and ticks are terrible around here, also the black flies...In the woods, you get the skeeters and horse flies....I wear that nasty smelling black fly repellent (that is thick black in color) on a bandanna around my neck, and cover myself in deep woods off when I am out...for the ticks, I use another product that I posted about here in another thread (I saturate my socks with the stuff too...Just do not put it on the bottoms of the socks...It will make your feet break out in a rash)...I wear a backpack type water container that cyclists use...can get 'em at Wal-Mart for $20.00...They hold 50 ounces of water and you can chill them in the fridge or put ice cubes in the container...the mouth where you fill it is wide enough...you wear it on your back and it has a tube you pull to open, then bite lightly to drink from....Then you have no excuse for not drinking your fluids....You can also fill it with 2 bottles of Gatorade, but be sure to wash it out after you use it all...1 tsp of Clorox bleach and fill the rest with water to clean it out...rinse it out well...that little bit of bleach sanitizes the plastic, and removes tastes and odors, but is not harmful....Just do not leave it in the pouch for too long....

i have also seen the neck misters you attach to yhe collar of your shirt that sprays a fine mist on the back of your neck. the cart pushers at wal-mart used them in the summer when i used to work there. havent tried it out yet but i was thinking of getting one.

GREAT ADVISE! I always have an ice chest with water on ice, drink and munchies for the Munchkins if they go. Nothing will cut your hunt short like a thirsty ,hungry kid. I got pretty tough skin but some may want to pack some sun screen of some type. I should say my arms, neck and face skin is tough, the rest of me is white as a ghost. I never where shorts so the rest of me stays covered up, short sleeve shirt is about as uncovered as I get.If any other part of me gets exposed to sun light it's like one of those vampire movies:hot: One may consider a hat to help protect their head. Heat stroke is no fun and games. Take care of yourselves.

I work for a state parks area here and found a great chigger, tick, mosquito repellent called "misty" its in a very small can and works great on the pesky critters . For those that might be interested . I dont know if it can be had over the counter or something the state came up with

Found several links for Misty products. Sold in cases of 6 or 12 as a commercial/industrial product. Highly rated stuff - 24% deet. I will post one of the links so you can look for yourself.

I have heard that these evaporative cooling jackets work quite well.. I have never tried one myself though.

I used combine hobbies by tossing my detector in a pack, towing a trailer with a Suzuki dirt bike on it, drop off the trailer and van in a city up in the Sierras, and ride back to some place where I'd go detecting. That was really cool. For water, I'd fill up an old military plastic canteen with water (leaving a place for expansion) and freeze it over night. Using a "pistol belt and canteen cover", the water would stay cold all day long. And don't forget, stick a Bounce in your pocket. Keeps most of the bugs away. I'll bet if you put one in each sock.....no more tics! Hey, good holes and big sun spots.

I have heard of the BOUNCE trick...have no idea why it works....I would think the bugs would be attracted to them instead of running for the hills...most smell like flowers...???
