If your Etrac does anything like this ...

Machine is 3 1/2 years old. It did this twice that I remember but each time turning it off and back on stopped it. The last time it would not settle down unless I turned it on its side. My coils worked fine on another Etrac and their coild did not help mine. Disconnect the coil wire and it would stop. Sent it in and was informed from Minelab tech that the motherboard had a burned component...$897 to replace. I decided not to repair it since I could get a new one for not much more than that with warranty. Received the machine back today and the box had not even been opened. They never even took the machine out and turned it on.

If you have an etrac that does anything like this and it is still under warranty SEND IT IN ASAP! Hope it saves someone from duplicating my mistake.

Mine will chatter like that but it's only in one area that was used to dump all of the coal ashes that were brought up out of the basement. It will not stop unless I drop the sensitivity down to around five.

That is not the same problem. Yours is from the ground minerialization which I have seen happen. As you can tell from the video this had nothing to do with the ground.

I would call them back and tell them you know that they did not even look at it. That is a little steep for a repair. Let them know that used ones are going for that now.......MO

WOW, I'm sorry you've had that kind of trouble.
Maybe I should go back to Fisher.

I have called and been put on hold, left message..etc. I have sent emails directly to Brian ??? (cant remember last name) So far no repsonse. I am going to keep trying till I at least get to speak to someone at Minelab. Kellyco was no help.

I did video me opening the box and my note explaining the problem and the return UPS label I sent were still paper clipped together inside.(no wonder they could not find it!! LOL)

Merc,

Please email me your contact info at Bart@bigboyshobbies.net

I will see what I can do to help you. Thanks!

That sounds outrageous for a repair !! Hope you can get the matter resolved. I don't think that I would resolve myself to just letting it go. Speak to someone until you can get some help !!!

Sounds like you had dealings with the male employee others have complained about over there at Minelab USA. It's a shame because he is costing them business.

This is when I am firm, polite but start up the chain of management. I can be extremely persistent.....it has helped in the past. But you might take up Bart on his offer, most likely he can get some results!

Ok. I got a response from the Kellyco tech. It explains why they did not even open the box and turn it on.

The erratic noises on the E-Trac is actually a common failure. We get a few of them in every now and then, but because the machine is digital and most of the components sit on a PCB board, when we detect a problem that is links to that area, all we can do is replace the PCB. It's much like the mother board on a computer. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.

Arent most all the Etracs all made in Malaysia??

Perhaps the Etracs will only have a 3-4 year shelf life which would be a shame since there are plenty of 12 year old Explorers still going strong, but then again they were built in Ireland or Australia. This could be an issue with cost cutting at ML.

Hey Merc...sorry about the troubles you are having with your etrac.

I've ran into similar trouble with ground mineralization where my trac is running fine...then I go over an unfavorable area and whamo, the machine goes crazy. What is concerning is that I lift my coil...sometimes as high as 6 feet into the air and the machine continues with the crazy sounds (after running across one of these areas). It takes a system reboot to clear up. This has happened on several occasions. Did you experience similar difficulties leading up to your machine failure? Thanks in advance, I'm still a newbie in terms of running a minelab.

My box said Made in Ireland on the label.

Firewxman - Mine only did this twice that I remember. It only occured when I would turn the machine on and it would behave like the video. Both times when I turned the machine off and turned it back on it started up like normal with no problems. I never had to reset the machine other than just a normal turn off turn on proceedure. Does not sound like what you are experiencing.

Thanks mercman...hope you are able to get things worked out.

That totally sucks! I traded my original in a couple weeks ago with no issues,But I bought a new one last week that works good. I hope this isn't a problem that is going to happen to all E-tracs! I wonder how come the Explorer series doesn't suffer from this same problem? If this is a common problem they need to straighten this thing out as these Detectors aren't cheap and should last much longer than 4 years. The one thing I did notice on my new one is if you look close you can see the dividing lines in the screen. I talked to a tech at minelab and he said all were like that. I told him my old one wasn't and he said it is an LCD screen and after time they all develop lines? He said I could send it in and get a new screen,But I think I will wait for now as long as it doesn't get worse and I have almost full warrenty left on the Detector.

The E-Trac is just like any piece of electronics in that now and then one will have some sort of issue.Issues with the E-Tracs are very rare at this point,Ray.

Jeff - Noise cancel had no effect on my problem. The detector would still read a object passed in front of the coil. It just continued to do what you see in the video non stop.

Ray - I would believe that if the Techs response did not call this a common problem.

MERCMAN I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU AND THAT IS WHAT HAS ME COCERNED IS WHEN HE SAID A COMMON PROBLEM? ALSO ANY REPAIR IN MY OPINOIN SHOULD BE KNOW MORE THAN 200.00 TOPS. A 800.00 dollar Repair is highway robbery!
