What is in a WV shelter cave? If you are wondering what a shelter cave is? It is a hard rock outcropping what you can get under to get out of the rain. Most are a few feet in depth. In WV most are sandstone and are nothing spectacular. Except this one 30 miles from my house. Last time I was there was 20 years ago. The old dirt road to it doesn't exist today. No road maps, so my friend and I had a hard time finding it in the thick Laurel. At times 40 ft. was an arduous task. This is some of the terrain we went through. I have been places where people paid to climb an artificial wall that looked like that.

We found the cave! 117 ft. across 20 ft. high and 250 ft. deep.

I am standing near the back of the cave.

People have been visiting this cave since the early 1800's. I was hoping to find something old.

The flora on the ground of that first pic looks like "Wacky-Tobacci". Now what were you really searching for? Just kidding of course. Wow! What an adventure that must have been. Great hunt John.

Don't you have Rhododendrons and Mt. Laurel in Edmonton? Fun to walk through.

THAT IS THE SPIRIT OF THE WHOLE THING!!

Great pics bud and a helluva cave. Been in a few like that but they went on forever in the limestone bluffs along the Mississippi with lots of dangers, like bottomles pits filled with water. A guy could set up housekeeping in that cave.

I thought about how good it would be to find a cave like that when you were in the woods in the winter time. The back half of the cave never freezes.

Looks like you did as well dirt fishing as I did this weekend.. :/
I caught a whole stringer full of nails.. :/
But.... I did find my two front survey pins for my OK property
finally.. Didn't find the back ones yet, but should be able to
knock those out next time.
The nails I found in my driveway leading in..
One of my neighbors up there had told me that someone
had thrown a bunch of nails in the driveway leading in
to the place.
They were PO'd at the former owner for some reason..
Well, he wasn't lying... I found a whole mess of them.
But luckily they have sunk into the ground, so they are
not a threat to my tires..
But in finding those marker pins, that means my detector
has paid for itself once again.. :)
This is the 2nd time I've used it to find survey pins..
