If you want a Gold Bug 2 buy it right now!

There is no plan to stop making the Gold Bug 2. It is selling better than ever. But as a very old analog design certain components are getting hard to source. Someday they will not be able to get a certain widget, and it is game over.

There can be temporary component shortages on anything.

The newer GB/G2 platform (a mere several years old) has no special component availability issues.

The GB2 was introduced in 1995, based in part on the even earlier "original Gold Bug". Some of the parts it's designed around are becoming very expensive as the manufacturers of those parts no longer stock them and make 'em only on special order with huge minimums; or the pricing on the parts is now aimed at the military repair market since the parts in question are not being used in new designs.

I doubt MSRP of $999 would have any appreciable impact on sales if it helped keep the unit available. Of course that may not help with parts costs if "military repair" means $1000 components. Still, everyone but Minelab underestimates what prospectors will pay to get another inch.

So, you're saying that if I can pick up a virtually new one with two loops for $500, I should jump on it?

Heck yeah if you do not PM me where and I will buy it.

White's is going to love it - should be great for GMT sales.

Or let me have it since Steve already has 2 of them? Heck, I am tempted to get that Bazooka Miner black ABS plastic sluice box with no riffles, after seeing YouTube videos of that thing in action . No need to classify and you can dump a 5 gallon bucket load of gravel and rocks thru it in under a minute with fast water flow. Lifting it out of the water will be a back breaker tho and it costs $300 plus shipping !!

OK Dave

My question is how about desigining a new gold bug (3???) using up to date components??? The GB2 has no equal as far as finding tiny gold and I would be rather dissapointed if it was to vanish from the detecting scene.

My GB2 is about 15 years old and still very capable of finding gold but my gold bug is only a couple of years old and has already been returned for repair twice. I hope to pick it up from the post office tomorow as it is suppposedly awaiting delivery. The GB is an excellent coin machine but it still hasn't found any gold.
A while ago i was detecting with the gold bug without luck but put it away and went back to using the GB2 and almost immediately found gold. How much was luck and how much it was detector performance I dont know.

Please consider desigining an up to date Gold Bug XXX

cheers

What I got was a Gold Strike!

I am not asking for much. Just put the Gold Bug 2 in the Gold Bug Pro box.

Better yet, a frequency select switch to flip from 71 kHz down to about 17 kHz. Just put the one in front of the seven... See how easy it is.

Maybe we can start a petition on this to Dave Johnson and company, and while we are at it, a much needed update on the Tesoro LST?

-Tom V.

The Lobo is a Tesoro unit that Dave did back in the day. Since he works for First Texas now do not hold your breath on that one. Any Lobo updates are something Tesoro would have to do, and I think you just saw it last year. It is now gray and the battery check was changed.

I hate to say it but I do not even expect to see a direct replacement for the Gold Bug 2, though I would love to be wrong about that. The detector companies first job is to make money, and good enough seems to trump bleeding edge performance in most cases. All the more puzzling when you can point to a unit like the GPX 5000 that dealers can hardly keep on the shelves at $5795. I guess if you are selling what you already have a fast as you can crank them out it is hard for the bean counters to see why they should invest more money in development.

I realize this is a little late, but I checked out that GB2 he was selling. I passed on it as there was something wrong with it. When you switched it to iron ID, the theshold wobbled all over the place, no matter where the loop was, or the settings. It also did not have the sensitivity of my GM3. It barely heard a little 1/2 grain piece laying on top of the ground, whereas my GM3 zips loudly. No idea how old it was as far as warranty but I think Fisher has a lifetime warranty? It was in new condition but I just didn't want to take a chance.

The scarier part is the Gold Bug 2 is out of production because a key part in not available. What if that is the part needed to fix the detector? OK, pretty doubtful I admit. But no sense buying someone else's problem.

Just snuck down to Reno last week and got a couple miniscule California flakes with my GB2. Nothing to brag about but my first gold in 2013.
