If You Only Could Own One Coil For The AT Pro And/Or At Gold, Which Would It Be?

5x8 gets my vote

Nel Tornado 12x13 has been on it my whole first season. I 95% of the time hunt wide open fields though. I do own the 4.5, 5x8 and stock coil as well. I'd go with the stock then the 5x8 depending on how trashy the areas are.

dear > if you want a great deep coil start from 9 inch to 15 inch only think about nel thunder and if you want a great coil for the salt water only you can trust nel snake coil >>>>> regards

This is a tough decision.....I truly love my 5 x 8 coil DD. I use it all the time in the woods and it has rewarded me well. But, I also like using the 9 x 12 concentric coil. It gives great ID at better depth, is sensitive to tiny objects, ID's better then a DD coil and ID's most bottle caps as junk. Considering my favorite targets are rings, I would pick the 9 x 12 coil, as that is the coil I use hunting in freshwater and open spaces. The 5 x 8 DD coil would definitely be my second choice.

IT ALL DEPENDS:

As there is not one universal, does everything combination of coil / detector, I choose for the location, environment, object being searched for then choose, what I feel is the "best" combination, that should yield the best probability of success. - just think stud earring to kitchen knife, from salt / fresh water to mountain tops - so many possibilities for my ATPro ...

The BIG NEL 16X17 for recent drops open sand beaches. I MUST use Minelab ProSwing 45

The standard 9X12 coil for no particular objects being searched for

The 5X8 for weight of coil, increased swing time, and for my grandson as a budding detectorist

The Sniper 4.5" in attics, in-between ceiling joists and in heavy overgrowth where larger coils just can not be swung.

Of the 11 detector only 2 were not used this year. Of my 8 "optional" (did not come standard with the detector) coils, 5 were not used.

For me, it would be the NEL Sharp Shooter. It is kind of a compromise between the 5 x 8 and 11" coil. It has near equal target separation as the 5 x 8 and is deeper. Maybe as deep as the 11" coil. if I could only have one Garrett, it would be the 11". It separates very good and is deeper then the 5 x 8. I may have to try that 9 x 12 concentric, though.. Happy New Year, everyone. HH jim tn

Definitely the 5x8. Not saying there is no need for the others , but the question was " if you could own only one ". With only a few exceptions , the majority of the targets most of us seek are within the depth range of the 5x8 ( as I said there are exceptions ). Most of the places I hunt are so laden with trash that if there can be only one it has to be the 5x8.

I used to prefer the stock coil, but now the 5 X 8 is my go to coil. Last time I went to the river before they let the water back up to normal pool, I took the 5 x 8 off and put on the stock coil and the trash just drove me crazy and I have to admit the smaller coil has spoiled me. The sniper comes in handy, but the 5 x 8 really does the job.

Tough one. I love both the 5x8 and stock coil on my ATP. I don't think I could make up my mind if one had to go. The good news is I can keep both

The 5x8 has never come off my pro since I put it on and that was back when the at pro just came out. That coil and machine are awesome together. However I just couldn't resist trying the sharpshooter. Haven't had a chance to get out with it yet though so can't comment on it. But the 5x8 is gonna be extremely hard to beat for pulling gold jewelry from the trash loaded parks I hunt. Thanks

If someone is seeking clad or other modern targets, that makes sense.

But...how do you know what you are missing, if you don't even know that it exists?

There ain't no magic carpet to stop the desired target from sinking beyond maximum detection depth.

A target stops sinking when it reaches the level in the soil that is compacted enough to equal the density of the target.

It's only logical that a whole lot of older targets many of us seek are not within the depth range of the 5X8.

Nicely said, marcomo. Like many, I feel the 5 x 8 is a wonderful smaller coil, too. If, however, I limited myself to only owning that one coil, or simply keeping it on all the time, I would be passing over a lot of good old targets that the 5 x 8 simply cannot see. I know this for a fact. HH jim tn

I tend to search more expansive fields so I'll go with the 8.5x11 coil. I do use the heck out of my 5x8 when I'm in highly mineralized soil or trashy areas. It boils down to using the right tool for the right job. Sometimes you need a hammer, sometimes you need a screwdriver.
