If you had to choose between the AT Pro and the 1500

Imaging is hard to beat. I've got the GTI 2500 and just preordered the AT Pro...what got me was the 15khz. I'm a jewelry hunter so I'm hoping to recover my initial costs.

But if I had to pick one to purchase and yes I do have to mention the weight issue, I'd still go with the GTI 1500 and shop around for a cheap ACE 250 for when the arm gets tired. I saw one here at a local pawn shop for $120 so the deals are out there.

If I planned to spend most of my time coin shooting I would definitely go for the GTI-1500 I used one for 4 years when I was more interested in coin shooting than any other type of detecting. The 1500 is a great coin shooter with its feature set and frequency optimized to make it find coins. If I was more interested in relic hunting then I would go for the AT PRO as that is what it was designed for - the expanded iron range, iron audio, and iron discrimination resolution and 15 Khz frequency all are useful features to make it a good relic machine. If I was planning on mainly hunting in and around fresh water lakes I would also go for the AT PRO.

If I was looking for a machine for salt water beaches I would look at other machines including Garrett's Infinium and Sea Hunter machines. If I was mostly planning on nugget detecting I would look elsewhere too but I don't have much personal experience with electronic prospecting so I can't really speak about any machines in that category.

That imaging feature sure grows on you once you learn it well. It's great for sizing smaller sized targets and leaving the larger junk targets in the ground. It will find you more coins in a year then the AT Pro would. But still, a tough call. :)

I agree that the 1500 is one coin eating machine. Mine has dead on pin pointing. My ace 250, I would say goes just as deep, if not a hair deeper. But, I can't claim the pinpointing is anything as sharp as my 1500. Like alot of you, I'm waiting on my A T Pro.

PS My hat is off about your ring total this year Edmonton-John. All of them jems, and you got to lose 6 months to being snowcovered.

I have a 2500 and feel lost without the imaging when I use my 550. But I am interested in getting an AT mostly for use at the lakes and rivers around here and would give it a good shot on the relics at the old homesteads. I won't make any decisions until spring (I'm in northern lower Michigan) and who knows what Garrett will come up with by then. But the imaging is a big plus for me.

Wait until the spring if you live in a winter wonderland. I have a hunch Garrett will come out with something like the AT-PRO which is optimized for coin hunting. Garrett has always been conscious of the importance of a flagship coin hunting machine. I bet something else is on the horizon from them

Take care

Yeah I have a feeling they ain't done with their new detector line and another one or two may be on the way.

Id have to say the 1500 i love the imaging feature a lot

Altho my ACE250 with sniper is always with me too
Decisions decisions.... thats part of the fun i guess!!!

I'll tell you in the spring, I'm going to get a AT Pro then, been hunting with a 1500 for 6 years, my only regrets is only 3 tones, I don't like to look at the meter all the time, only when it's a weak signal, the 3 read out will be a plus for easier reading, us old guys need BIG numbers:rolleyes:

Greetings,

Well, you have heard a lot about the GTI 1500 in posts to your question. I guess I am going to throw in a confusion factor for you to think about. First, I have to admit that I have never used the 1500, but I have used it's big brother the GTI 2500. The 2500 is a great machine and I am sure the 1500 is too. I guess the draw back in my mind with the 1500 and the 2500 is the special coils that are necessary for imaging. You are very limited is coil choices if you want imaging. If you want target size information I would suggest looking at the GTP 1350. I am on my second one and it will tell you target size with any coil. Special coils are not required. The draw back to the GTP 1350 is that to determine target size you have to have 7" of sweep room on either side of the target that is free of other targets. In trashy areas this can be a problem. However, the imaging coils that are available for the 1500 are on the large side for trashy areas and if you use a small one you won't be able to get size information anyway. I have found the GTP 1350 to be an excellent coin and jewelry machine that performs very well in most ground due to it's ground balance tracking. It also works well on the beach in the beach mode. It's ability to tell you target size has really reduced the amoung of large junk that I dig, especially on beaches.

Now, as for the AT Pro, I own one and it is really not in the same class as the 1500. The AT Pro leans very strongly towards the relic hunter. The expanded Iron range and the special iron audio is really targeted towards relic hunting. I am not much of a relic hunter but I bought My AT Pro for its waterproof capability. I am mainly a coin and jewelry hunter both on land and in the water (wading) and this machine really has a lot to offer in that area. I plan to get my AT Pro wet. I like the pro mode and it's ability to distinguish bottle caps from good targets but I will probably not take full advantage of the Iron Audio and the expanded iron range. Of course I might change my mine as I use it more.

Now! with that said, if you are mainly a land coin and jewelry hunter I would go with the GTP 1350 or the GT I1500. If you are a relic hunter or like to get your detector wet to find coins and jewelry I would go with the AT Pro. If you do go with the AT Pro, keep in mind that the Std Mode is pretty much like the GTP 1350, GTI 1500 and other Garrett detector in the way it performs, but the Pro Mode is a different animal and there is a learning curve to learn how to get the most out of it. It might seem a bit discouraging at first but stick with it and you will learn to love it.

God Bless and HH!!
