If You Had The Choice, Would You Hunt Using "AUDIO MODULATION" Turned On Or Off?

Audio modulation is basically a setup on metal detectors where the target response audio is affected by the distance of the target to the coil. So.....the closer the target to the coil, the greater (louder) the audio response. The further the distance from the coil, the less (quieter) the audio strength. Both have their benefits.

It is always off. Why make it harder to hear? You see how deep it is when you pinpoint it...

On, you kind of know how deep something is without doing anything but listen, saves the extra step of measuring depth. I'm mainly a silver hunter so my goal is to find coins below the 4" depth and those faint tones help key me in on those targets.

I'm with airscapes on this. I prefer hunting in multiple tone modes, not VCO. The problem I have with modulation is that when a target gets deep (read faint), the sound becomes more similar to the grunt of iron at least on my detector. When the target is closer to the coil of course it's a non issue. As airspace mentioned, one can easily assess depth with either a graphic representation on the detector, a confidence meter of some kind or by using the pinpoint button on most detectors.

On some detectors unfortunately multiple tones are not an option (my F19 for example).

The only detector i have with the option of 'off/on' is deeper with modulation turned on, so if i want to go deep it stays on, it makes a big difference eg it gets a dime at 15"-16" in air, but loses around 2" if i turn off modulation.

Depends on conditions. In our city park where any coin less then 6" will be clad it's nice to hear the depth. Places that are clean I like the added depth possibilities of even the deepest coins being loud.

I only hunt with a detector with audio modulation of some sort....not necessarily VCO as that is a bit different...albeit similar. Relic hunting in areas with a lot of targets I am listening for the deeper fainter signals and avoiding surface taregts. I do not wish to constantly look at a screen but rather just swing the coil while looking ahead of me and use my ears.
I found after 35 years of detecting that my ears are more accurate than most any other method....in most cases.
But that fits me and my style....certainly I can see why others like modulation off.

Boost the search audio [or not]
Pinpoint, modulated, so you knew how deep the object was.

I have always wanted to play with an old compass metal detector. There has been nothing but great comments on them.
