If you had a choice which detector

Neither. I went with Gold Bug Pro. G2 is basically the same machine but I prefer the S rod grip on the Gold Bug Pro.

For nugget detecting? I do not need waterproof right now and so do not need the special coil and headphone connectors. If I decide to do some mask and snorkel stream prospecting then maybe I will pick up another AT.

From my perspective there is little difference between all the mid-frequency multi-purpose detectors when it comes to nugget detecting. Chose one based on the other features they offer. Since I am nugget detecting I do not need the extra bells and whistles.

Honestly, there is not much difference between a Fisher Gold Bug Pro, Garrett AT Gold, Minelab X-Terra 705, Teknetics G2, Tesoro Lobo, and White's MXT when all are in prospecting mode and sporting comparable coils. I can find nuggets about as well with any of them. Nugget detectors come in four basic flavors:

1. Fisher Gold Bug 2 and White's GMT
2. All the mid frequency VLF detectors 13 - 30 kHz
3. The Garrett Infinium and White's TDI
4. The Minelab PI units

THE real QUESTION IS-WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO USE THE UNIT. IN,UNDER OR AROUND WATER YOUR BETTER SERVED WITH THE at AS WATERPROOF AND IF YA FALL.DIVE OR SLIP NO BIG DEAL. NOT SO WITH MY TRUSTY OL'gb2 OT lOBO. but IF IT EVER HAPPENS NO BIG DEAL AS I ALWAYS CARRY ALCOHOL IN THE BACKPAK AND TRUCK. I JUST POP OPEN THE UNIT AND DOUCHE REAL GOOD WITH THE ALCOHOL AND IT DISPLACES,DILUTES THE WATER AND DRIES ABSOLUTELY CLEAN AND GOOD TO GO. ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT AROUND SALT WATER AS CORROSION SETS IN EXTREMELY FAST WITH THAT ALKALI SALTWATER-jOHN---oops sorry caps
