i have around 800$ what should i buy a used excal 1000 or new Sovereign gt??

If you are in the water mostly than the Excalibur, but if you find yourself on the beach or only up to your knees but also like to land hunt then a GT. The GT has more controls for land hunting and such. Excalibur is IMHO the best water unit on the market. It was released years ago but there still isn't a machine that can touch it in many situations. I ended up using one on land in the woods that a friend loaned me. Never used a Sovereign either so it was all new. The machine wasn't even working right (he had to send it back....) yet I was able to pop a large cent and my first bust dime (1835) in about an hour. That's pretty good considering I didn't know the tones yet and the machine was bad...having a very unstable threshold no matter what you did.

GT - S12 coil - Ratphones - long dry sand scoop - Beach Hat - sunblock .............. anything more than this a a waste of $$$$$$

What? No! A Les Paul or 69 Strat, with maple neck of course! Oops no an Excal II with a Pro-Scoop! (Played through a 65 Vibrolux Reverb)

My son is a musician and these are his two favorite Fender Strats. One nice "74" Cream Strat and a Special Edition Clapton Blackie plus some more of his Fenders and a couple of Schecters also.

Have two Les Pauls, an AM Deluxe Strat, and an AM Std Strat, and a Custom Vibrolux Reverb... A roomfull of amps and a few more guitars. It's just like detectors... one will never do. :csflag:

Nice... I love Strats. My first guitar was a '67 Tele. I traded it in on a Hofner 12 string acoustic because I wanted to be Jim (Roger) McGuinn... the rod finally broke in the neck of that piece of junk. Hindsight is 20/20 as they say... that guitar would be worth over 10K now.

My old Silvertone 1485 (6x10) like Jack White uses, was stolen. I still have the footswitch though! That amp was a MONSTER. I learned to handwire tweed Fender circuits, the tweed Champ and Tweed Deluxe. They sound nice. I keep one of the Champs, a Flextone III, a Crate V-16, and the Vibrolux within reach. I rotate them i/o beside my easy chair and have a Strat on a stand within reach of the chair at all times! I also collect old Jordan amps. It is a sickness... but a good one! Detecting and blues guitar are my two hobbies.

Had a 65 Gretsch Tennesean. Bought it new for $350 in 1965. Sold it a few years back to a collector who keeps the stuff in glass display cases. Got $1200 for it and bought a Fender P-bass with both a J pickup and a P pickup. Still have a Gibson Les Paul. Also had a Magnatone amp that I had rebuilt. Replaced the hissy electrolytics and a few tubes. Play jazz blues and metal detect..mostly in the water, the detecting I mean. I have had more fun playing the bass than all the guitar stuff combined. However, the bass player doesn't even get a second look from the groupies. If I could only sing and play awesome lead. Jim

Why have a guitar when you could be beating on a drum? I'll stick with my Ludwig 5 piece drum set with a rack with 8 cymbals!:yo:

Back to the topic....:detecting:

I have both the GT and Excal ll. I use the GT in knee high water with the control box hip (waist) mounted. If a wave comes in you just have to make sure the 180 meter mounted on the rod stays high enough. (I am 6'2" tall so knee high water keeps the box 2' higher than water level.) For a first time Minelab user the 180 Meter really helps you learn the tones by seeing the number, hearing the tone, then digging & seeing the coin. Since the GT's are more available, less costly, and very durable, I would say by a used GT. If you hit the low tides right, you really do not need to go very deep in the water to find the good stuff! (The treasure zones can get high and dry during low tides). You do take a risk with the GT in that it is close to what could destroy it (salt water). But with care we have been doing it for 5 months with no problems.

I might try a little "knee high" water hunting this summer. I already hip mount my GT so that won't be a problem. As a precaution I think I'll do what others have done...Sticking a plastic bag over the box front first and then using a rubberband to seal the plastic around where the coil plug goes into the bottom of the box. Then you just poke your headphone jack right through the plastic to plug it in. It isn't going to keep the unit from getting soaked if you fall in the water (unless you are very quick at getting up!) but it'll prevent any splashed water from getting things wet.

By the way, if somebody does happen to get their box wet quickly take the battery out. Let the unit dry for a few days next to something warm like a heater vent. I've recovered a number of electronics (cell phones, etc) that were dropped in water by doing that, but I'm talking fresh water here.

Anybody else have a preference for how they mount/protect the box when water hunting? What about mounting it very high on your chest or even on one of those tire floats when the water is calmer?

That's interesting, I'm the same, detecting & guitars, I have a Tele & Cole Clark acoustic, man they both can sing (+ 4 or 5 others) It is a sickness (my wife tells me), a good one as you say, once you got the bug, it's in 'da bones'. The guitars get worked everyday but i only go detecting when the beach is right , that'll be soon hopefully.......

Have a 1964 Fender Princeton Reverb Amp and 1964 Fender Jaguar...also a 1967 Fender Coronado 12 string. Wish I'd have spent the money on a Strat instead of the Jag, but...who knew? The 64s are pre-CBS, so they are much more desirable. Bought them all new. Boy, do I feel old! Have a nice day.

Depends on what kind of hunting you will be doing. If you are anywhere near water, then for sure the Excalibur. If never near water then the Sovereign. Either way you will be getting one kick butt machine.
