if you could only have one detector........

what would it be and why? i think most treasure hunters own multiple detectors trying to find the perfect machine which doesn't exist. i have had several detectors over the years and seem to make better finds with the turn on and go type machines. all the bells and whistles are cool if you like fooling with all the settings i guess, but my choice would be a fisher 1266. simple to use, good battery life , and deep searching capabilities. let's hear your choices.....thanks.........roger

Out of all the ones I have tried I would go with the Explorer SE pro. Goes deep, good selection of coils, sturdy build. I also like the way I can setup custom settings with the learn feature.

I haven't been hunting as long as most here on the Furom. But I own an XLT, Vaquero and Compadre. I like and dislike things about all of them my Xlt was my first real detector, and the one I have the most time with. The Vaquero, the more I use the more I love same with the Compadre.

If I could get the whole depth thing with the Tesoros figured out (xlt pull the trigger and you know how deep to dig, still trying to get it right on the Tesoros) I would IF I HAD TO, sell the Xlt then Compadre and keep the Vaquero.

sorry for the long answer but thought I should explain my resons

interesting answers so far.....and i'd bet almost every detector made will mentioned here at some point. anyone else??

I'm with pulltab. Although I have several detectors, I think I would choose the Vaquero if I could only keep one.
It is light, has good depth, and only uses one battery. The lifetime warranty is a very big plus too!!!
I have not found any ground that I cannot ground balance the machine yet and that for me makes this detector very versatle.
I also think it does very well when hunting around trashy sites.
Just my opinion,
Felix

I have about 10 detectors and have had several more and I always answer this question the same. I would use my CZ6a. The only thing it cannot do is go under water. Yes, there are others that are lighter, faster response, waterproof, better in iron, more sensitive to gold, etc. I have and have used most of them....but you said only one !

Visual ID, water resistant, dual frequency, DEEP, multiple coils, manual ground balance, simple to use, multiple tones, normal and salt modes, built to last. Still love my 6a !! Now that I set up a straight shaft configuration where the control box is under the cuff, it's much lighter to swing and it's getting a lot more use on both land and beach.

I will probably cry a bit when my 6a finally decides enough is enough.

I couldn't happily go with just one - I'd want at least two because one would have to be a water machine - the other would be my MXT because of its versatility. That said, I'm glad I can own/use more than one as I consider the MXT a bit heavy and awkward for competition hunts whereas my Tesoro umax models are lean, light and fast handling for that type of hunting and serve well for general park, fair ground etc.

Because if you didn't like it, you could sell it and buy every companies flagship detector on the planet, all at once:rofl:

I would have to go with my ML SE PRO as the finds from it are what helped me purchase all of my detectors including the GPX. I can't really comment on the Tejon as I just got it and the Vision for that matter, but so far I prefer the SE to the ETrac, F-75, DFX, and Tejon (because of the ID). Ask again in a month or two:detecting:

I like the tones of my SE...they talk to me. She is a silver magnet.

For $420.00 a serious treasure hunter would be dumb not to have a Vaquero in the gun cabinet, but i am seriously looking at the new minelab X-Terra,looks really promising,I am sure if Tesoro stays in the game they are looking at converting to digital type design.dr.who.

Sovereign for me. can hunt seamlessly from dry sand to wet sand. Can be used mounted on the rod or you can hiipmount it and even chestmount it for wading. It has one of the best IDs available and gets real deep. Lots of optional coils to cover any situation.

Weight and slow motion search are the drawbacks to this detector.

It would be a Minelab Excalibur II.
Basically, it is a Sovereign in a waterproof housing.

Nothing works as well in salt water and on a beach and that is the main type of hunting I do.

If I were not a water hunter my choice would be the new White's Spectrum V3.

If you want to use one good for you, but if you want to find whats laying next to trash(iron) try a Tesoro. I say this because I have had an Explorer (Exploder) and it sounded like some kid's toy flute. To get back to the subject, I would pick the Tesoro Toltec ll if I was limited to one detector, it has a great analog meter, adjustable ground ballance, 12khz operating frequency, and Tesoro's famous ED 120 discrminator. The only bad thing about this detector is..............Tesoro quit making them, and they are hard to find on the used market. I'm just glad I am not limited to one choice, I have 11 detectors, and I like Tesoro's, White's and Fisher. I did not spend a small fortune on these detectors, as most were picked up used, and with buying used Tesoro's there is no worries. I'm hooked on collecting detectors , I guess I'm just an addict.................Hombre

I find it interesting that many are choosing a brand other than Tesoro if they could have only one detector. For me personally, I prefer a Tesoro - simplistic, deep, light and easy to swing, no programs to worry about and figure out, and easy to interpret sounds.

Dam it hombre! maybe i will skip the ML X-Terra and stay strictly Tesoro!.Since you put it like that!.dr.who?.

Right now I would have to go with the Tejon. I am primarily a relic hunter and this machine is very deep on relics and also lets me find some decent iron relics, which most other detectors discriminate out. You have to learn the machine to decide which iron targets to dig. Usually the larger the area of the signal the more likely I am to dig, although most large signals are horseshoes. My Tejon gives a nice signal on a ten to twelve inch minnie ball and my DFX cannot even detect it, and my friends DFX could not detect it either, this was on two occasions.

I am surprised at the number of people who do not even mention Tesoro on this Tesoro forum. Many like the Minelab, which is a good machine but you have to go real slow and it's weight is a detriment. I sold off a Minelab Ex. II and bought a DFX which was not a smart thing to do. The Tejon easily attains more depth than the DFX and that is for sure.

It does not surprise me that no one mentioned any detectors made by Garrett or Bounty Hunter. Seems like everyone who detects a lot sticks with the Minelab; Tesoro; White's' and Fisher lines.

It would need to have a good monotone mode as well as multi-tone mode, a TID, and very good battery life.

Fisher F5 (but they need more coil choices so maybe T2 for now).
