If the ACE says it's at 8"...believe it! :yikes:

I went to a tot lot last night for a short hunt with ACE and the 9x12 coil. Things around here are soaking wet, and I wasn't as thorough as I should've been, but I found that the ACE display is more correct than not with this big coil! One of my first hits registered as a quarter and the depth showed 8".. 'we'll see' I thought to myself. I dug 4" and nothing yet, 4" more and the pinpointer would go off but not there yet! Anyway, another thin layer of mulch and out came a quarter! From there I continued on to find several pennies at 6'ish, and a dime at about the same depth (didn't measure that one). All targets were at the depth the ACE said they'd be!!!

One thing I have noticed is that even though I run the sensitivity at '4', I still get a ding when the coil gets near the metal posts of the equipment. I can get a little closer by dropping the sens, but if I want to pinpoint a possible target it AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN! No biggie though because I did have some wacky multiple signals near a pole that I decided to dig anyway. I got the familiar ding but also the bell of a coin, kinda back to back really. I found a penny at about 4" with the help of my pointer. Maybe I'm onto something here...more tests are in order!!

I've also found a few 'one way' targets. The ACE showed good signals on those, but only rang out intermittently, and with a slower swing speed. One target was a penny on edge, and the other was a dime in a hole deep enough that my digger would almost disappear! That was determination on my part to find out what the ACE was seeing...but it didn't lie to me! All my hunts so far have been in 'all metal' just to see how accurate the ID is. I have to admit, though I was skeptical at first, this 'little' detector packs quite a punch and has surprised me with it's accuracy!

Hey Randy,
How long have you had the ACE? It does sound impressive, the depth and ID. Do you think it is in part from the amount of moisture in the soil?
I am northeast of you in AR and it IS WET. We have had over four inches of rain in the last two days. I just ordered an ACE 250 that should be here Friday.... can't wait to give it a try.... hope my unit works as good as the one you have.

I have found a couple of coins deep with my 250 also. Still learning it but have had great results. Your gonna love it!!:garrett::clapping::detecting:

That's good to hear. Coins just don't get that deep around here. Thanks for the reference on the hunt using the 9 x 12 coil.

Yeah, my wife keeps kickin' my butt with that Ace! Happy Hunting!

I am new to MDing and I really like my 250 too. If its a coin I dig up instead of a piece of pop can, tab, or matchbox car then the reading are usually about 95% correct. If it reads between penny/dime its a cent, if on a dime or next seg. its a dime,ect..

I don't get the depth reading accuarcy that you seem to get. At the playground in wood chips the coin maybe only 1/2" deep and I will normally get a 4" reading. And my coil is hugging the wood chips surface(1"). UW says its probably becuase its a fresh lost coin and those may not read the depth correct. From all the post I read in here I figure he's the man, so I try to listen to everything he says. I am sure most of it is me not the 250. In time maybe I will get enough experiance. Still looking for that first late 1800s/early 1900s coin.

As for the 9x12 coil, I was thinking about getting one. But allot of my areas have trash and the woods I hunt are tight, so I probably will get the sniper first. Just got my first Pinpointer(V-4) and its not what I expected. It is not strong enough to read into my flaps, only reads about 3/8" on dimes and 1/2" on quaters. Thats not near enough to scan a flap. Guess I'll have to save up for a garret PP...Maybe next year, or unless I get lucky and find some good rings.

I have been playing with my ACE here in FL and I have been testing various areas dry, wet, sand, mud, etc...the unit does not lie that is for sure and it seems to work much better when the soil is wet and the unit is in fresh water. It has not let me down for depth. What it reads is where the item is. I have the standard coil, the 9X12, and the sniper and all 3 work extremely well no matter what. With the added ProPointer I have all I need for detecting most sites. I have not sampled it in salt water yet but am going to soon. As everyone on here has said it does not do well there but I am going to try to see how to overcome it when I do try. As I said in an earlier post I have a spot in the Gulf of Mexico island beach park that gold and silver coins have been found and this will be a good place for me to work this ACE baby to see if I can break the "salt water curse".

I am new to this as well I am about 6 months into detecting and I can tell you Uncle Willy and John and a few others are who you need to listen to. I have been reading there posts and taking their advice and have found some of their statements to be dead on so listen and follow. I have yet to detect north of the "sand zone" of Fl so when I get into mineralized soils I am sure I will be posting frustrating question they hate to see over and over again. Right Uncle Willy and John? I have found that sometimes the ACE will read a depth (say 2 inches) of a target that is just sitting on the surface out of site. I mean just barely covered with soil. That is one of the reasons I got the ProPointer to save the hassle of finding those elusive targets.
