Hi all,
Here are my finds from today's lake dive. It was a great day to be out there in the sun, even if the nut wasn't that great. I missed my 1st Barber dime by a hair ! Anyway, the 1916S is the oldest merc I've ever found and too bad it wasn't a D! The D would have been worth $700+ even in good condition! Ahh well. Next time. Here are a couple pics of before and after cleaning....the tar gets thick after 90 years!

Well, I couldn't see the date at all on the Merc even after some light cleaning and it looked so far gone that I figured I do electrolysis to get done to the metal. When I saw 1916 I thought "Awww dang", but even if it was a "D" I can't imaging how else I could have made it through that corrosion without using pretty aggressive cleaning methods. I like electrolysis for cleaning silver and gold.

I only do this if i want to display my coins i would not do this if i were interested on selling it. Try a number 2 lead pencil eraser just keep on rubbing the coin it will really make it shine

Any way you slice it, that's a nice find!! D or not! Looks like you had a lot of good luck on that lake dive. Congrats!

HH,

Dan

Do the coin dealers really give you the razz price wise if you clean em with eloctrolysis? I'm stell trying to figure all this cleaning business out, espectially as far as not ruining them value wise to a coin dealer. I found out you don't mix copper with silver in the eloctrolysis bowel. My quarters came out with a pinkish looking tint.
