If I wanted to mod a land detector....

...into a water hunter, trying to keep a low budget, is it worth doing? I'd like to be able to submerge completely but not necessarily any great depths. Mainly I'd like to know that I'm not going to fry the electronics when, yes-WHEN, my headphones get dunked, etc. Any advice?

Unless you are really skilled with tools and are willing to do lots of research and learning, and just want the challenge of building an underwater machine...buy a machine made to work in the water.
For real shallow headphone dunking, almost any of them will work. I could name them all and they all work pretty good. Some people like one brand over another, but that's the individual expressing itself rather than the ranking of a machine.
One major difference is do you want to use a PI or a VLF? Both are good in the correct applications but I would say the PI is a little more difficult to master.
The next issue is price. There are some detectors, middle of the price range like Tesoro and Headhunter, that many claim works just as good as the $1200 machines.
A major consideration is reliability. Water machines take a lot worse abuse and are subjected to challenges land detectors are not. Which ones are the best in terms of reliability is debated continuously on detecting forums. You might check out the manufacturer's warranty. Some are one year, others two years, and one is lifetime. Then read how well that manufacturer back their warranty. Read for a couple of hours and you will start to see a pattern.
You build your own pattern. I have built mine and no need to prejudice your independent reasoning. Regards...Jim

It can be done.
In simplest form a detector like the Sovereign or Fisher CZ series sealed in a plastic bag and hung around your neck.
More complex is buying a watertight box and some CableClams and mounting your detector electronic board and controls inside it.
You could even buy an old water detector like the Garrett AT3 that no longer works and use the watertight box and controls re-wired to your new board.
If you are handy with tools and understand a bit about electronics you might end up with something as good or maybe better than what you would buy.

If I were you I would seal up my detector in a zip lock bag using red ductape and hang it around my neck.
Hunt the beaches in water out to your waist until you found enough treasure to buy a new waterproof detector from Fisher, Minelab, White's, Garrett's, or Detector Pro HeadHunter ... which ever one you choose go for the 10" coil if it is an option.
Dont waste your money on any detector made in China! So far they have not made anything worth having.

or even a piriate will work for about 400.00 ask mr bill about them too as one good ring will pay for the detector and then some i did put an I.D.Edge in a waterproof box and it works for my wading
in the lakes but as it can be opened by a hard hit i would'nt try it in the ocean as one big wave might open it up and fry the detector

I was just checking DP's site and discovered the wader is rated for 6 ft.! Now I just need to dig up the funds!

LOL at myself! There's a DP section... LOL! No tellin' what you can find when you actually look!
